From the first noodlings before DDTW to the final chord of Billies, the band was on fire. Highlights included the first Raven in almost 3 years, You Might Die Trying, Pig, Recently, and the run of Ants/#41/Two Step to close the main set.

Incredible show. Although Alpine '08 was one of the best weekends for me, this was a 5 for different reasons... I'm used to lawn for most shows so this was a much more up close and personal experience. Got down in front for the encore which was sweet. Love this band so much. Couldn't start the tour off better!

"Who starts their tour at Madison Square Garden?" -Dave

This show was fantastic!
DDTW had great energy and the black curtain that was in front of the stage was a Fail because it nearly came down on Rashawn and Jeff. :)
Cornbread was nice in the 2 spot. The fans are really getting into this song. New horn section midway through.
FTWII- Awesome song! Sounds as tight as the studio version.
Raven- I'm glad they brought this back. I doubt it will follow them to the end of the summer tour but def a good change up. Was waiting for grey street with the 12 string out on the stage.
YMDT- I'm pretty sure the crowd was singing louder then Dave. This song gets better and better live. Coffin tore it up. I can see it in the 1 spot like they did to 2step last tour.
Spaceman- Sweet/ Straight up love song. I can tell the studio version is going to be great. Its gonna grow into itself live.
Nancies- Boyd killed it as usual. Dave started out with a scat solo rather then improv on the beginning lyrics.
Pig!!!- First time seeing it live. Great song! Hope they keep playing it!
Melissa- Classic song and a great performance but would have liked to hear Jessica. haha Allman didn't even acknowledge Dave at the end of the song and walked into a mic.
Recently!!!- Highlight of the night. My favorite Dave song...couldn't believe they played the whole thing. That jam is sick. Unbelievable!
SDL & 27- They were the cigarette after Recently. The end jam of SDL was dynamite.
Why I Am- Was great to hear more then 20 seconds. Dave wasn't lying on a couch during this performance. haha. Crowd started chanting Leroi afterward. Dave said it was his favorite song in the beginning of the recording process. "I'm still here dancing with the Groo Grux King".
Ants 41 and 2 step- 3 monsters in a row. Jam at the end of Ants is getting longer and longer. New end to 2 step...huge drum solo. Coffin walked up to Carters drums during 41 and they were improving back and forth. Very cool!
Sister-Dave voice was very clear. Usually by this time in the show Sister sounds strained. How does he get that guitar tuned that high without a capo? Can someone please message me if they know?
Tripping- Solid finish to the show. This is going to be a great year for DMB. Cool to see Ants Tripping and Recently in the same show.
Izod Tomorrow Night!

Very solid show. Allman came out of nowhere. Great to see Raven, Pig, Nancies (FTLOG Bring Warehouse back after this). THe Ants Marching had a cool arrangement and 41, two step were very solid--carter gettin crazy these days. Saw that the setlist originally had granny, and the band rather randomly went for pig--very cool. Great opener, great venue --Hit up bar called Stouts for pre/post show fun --good good time

DDTW opening with the curtain was awesome. Greg Allman was an awesome surprise. An awesome concert- can't wait for this summer!

This show was easily the best I've been to. 3 live debuts, a guest appearance by Gregg Allman, and rarities like Raven & Pig totally made the night. This show contained 2 of the 4 longest songs of the entire spring tour, so it was definitely worth the price. Coffin & Reynolds repeatedly killed on solos, although Timmy sometimes seemed to drag on for a while but I only realized this after the show when I recapped with friends. The high energy throughout was stellar, and this was one show that really never had a dull moment. Superb.

Great show, great kickoff to 2009. The highlight of the night had to be Recently- it was just amazing. Raven came out of nowhere... it's been a long time and I was dying to hear this one!! (hopefully they'll stick with Raven and kick it up a notch even) Two Step was another stand out (not that it ever isn't). Was great to hear the new tunes as well... Funny the Way It Is was great live, Spaceman started slow but grabbed me with that catchy chorus, and Why I Am is an absolute gem and has a -very- bright future. Love Timmy. First time seeing Coffin... A++ right there. Rashawn's the man, and those background vocals fit perfectly. '09 is off to a great start.

Who starts a tour at MSG? DAVE MATTHEWS BAND DOES!!!! They rocked the house all night long. You could feel the anticipation in the air as they teased before Don't Drink The Water. The new songs sounded great and have lots of room for exploration which is very exciting. It was great to hear old favorites such as Raven and Pig. The jam on Recently was probably the highlight of the night, closely followed by Jeff's solos on #41 and You Might Die Trying. The band is in a great place and if this show set the bar quite high for the rest of the tour!!

Very solid night to kickoff the tour. At first listen I tought all the new material sounded full of potential. DDTW opening has gotten a little common, but I still love it. 1st ever Raven for me, nice surprise. Good to hear Recently, Pig, SDL and 27. Gregg was another pleasant surprise, gotta love the Allmans. The AM>41>TS run was awesome.

This is my 20+ show...

Overall: Slow start...but great great finish.

We didnt need another DDTW opener (same opener as stand up for a cure show)...After a nice Raven and YMDT (w/ a sick jam) - the show picked up. Pig was great to hear...and while there was no funky intro or outro, Recently was great also. Mellissa w/ Allman was a good surprise (although people on the boards knew about it) and 41 & Two Step were bangers. Nice to hear Billies close out the set.... but I was hoping for a Jessica. Off to NJ...

This concert was filled with tons of the bands major hits. My personal highlights were Dancing Nancies (my favorite song), Pig, Ants, #41, Two Step and Tripping Billies in the encore. There was also some nice rare treats like Raven and Recently. This was a great way to start off the tour. The new songs have potential with Funny The Way It Is leading the way as my favorite. Much better live than the studio version. It will be great to see how the setlists change for tomorrows show across the river. Again, great concert for the diehard Dave fans.

"Who starts a tour at Madison Square Garden?" DMB does, and they put on a pretty amazing show too. Great mix of rarities (Raven, Pig, Recently), classics (Ants, #41, and Two Step in a row to end the main set), and highly anticipated new songs (Funny the Way It Is, Spaceman, and Why I Am). The crowd was loud and rocking the whole time. My one and only gripe would be Sister in the E1 slot. After such an incredible end to the main set the encore left something to be desired. No wonder so many fans stuck around in hopes of just "one more song"...

Dave loves gettin down during cornbread. He's a dave steppin, dancing machine! Raven was a nice surprise. The new songs sound good. Allman was a great surprise, i loved sweet melissa. 41 into two step was sick. Overall they played every song over 100% and you can't ask for more.

There is a lot that has yet to be reported that, to me, were one of a kind moments that made this such a special show.

I am approaching 100 lifetime shows, so maybe I notice the "little things" more than usual...

Show did start off a bit slow... one note on Cornbread - they added a new part to the song, music only (no lyrics), was kind of like a bridge of sorts. Short but I liked it.

Funny TWII is a great song, I'm looking forward to seeing it take shape over the course of the tour.

Raven is one of my favorites so I was happy to hear that. Few small blunders in there by Dave and Carter, but since it has been a while I think they did a great job and it sounded pretty solid.

YMDT - sounded good, still love the outro - Dave really did some nice improv screaming, horns were spot on. Coffin is really sick... as we already know

Spaceman - don't know what to make of it yet. I like the lyrics and word play, may need to hear the album version to get a better sense of this one.

Nancies - awesome, Boyd was great.

Pig - made a great comeback. Timmy added some nice detail to the verses, very subtle though. This was where I noticed that Dave was looking up and to the right at a few lyrical points that may have made him think about Roi, almost as if he was looking up at Roi wherever he is. You could tell he was missed I got a sense that the main band members had an awkward feeling about starting a new tour without Roi there with them... more to come on that.

Melissa- Greg Allman came out, sounded good. Best performance of Melissa I have heard. Nice soloing by Timmy.

Recently - this is where the show picked up. They FINALLY played the song all the way through and it was as good as ever! I really hope they keep this in the rotation.. I'd been wanting for them to bring it back for a long time. Carter sand the harmonies.

So Damn Lucky - The band version just keeps geting better. The end jam changed a bit but was awesome.

#27 - I like but had to run to the bathroom.. didn;t seem to miss much.

Why I Am - awesome upbeat new album song. Dave on electric. Before they started to play it Dave said that it was Roi's favorite of the new songs.

After Why I Am was over, the crowd broke out into a Roi chant for about 2 minutes. I got choked up and you can tell (I was close to the stage) that all of the guys were overwhelmed with emotion and Dave didn't know what to say...

...so instead of finding the right words they jumped into the best Ants Marching I have EVER heard. For the first minute or so of the intro all the guys had straight serious faces and I am pretty sure I noticed a few tears on Dave, Fonzi, & Boyd's faces, they seemed as if they were playing their hearts out to honor Roi and to channel the emotions created by the crowd's Roi chant to the music.. and that they did. After a minute or so of the intro, Carter burst into a huge smile and I could just tell that they were all thinking the same thing... tonight's Ants was a tribute to Roi and they would play the shit out of it for him.

The energy rolled right over into #41 and Two Step. Probably the absolute best verions of all 3 songs I have ever seen or heard. Coffin & Carte Dueling solos in #41, Coffin started the jam with the old-school belafleck riff jam (I think another nod to Roi.) And them Timmy did it up. Everyone got a turn on Two Step and it was spectacular!

Quick Break

Solid Sister with Carter & Rashawn on harmonies.
Solid Billies closer.

Carter threw out a shitload of stix after the show. Of course I didn't get one.
The other thing I wanted to mention was that Stefan seemed a bit out of it tonight.. not sure if it was just a hard reality not having Roi by his side for the 1st time at a tour opener or if it was something else, but I hope he is ok.

All in all an amazing and special show that I will never forget. NJ tomorrow, can't wait.

This was seventh concert and my second and msg, and it blew away the other time! I liked this concert a lot but there were a few things that werent that great.
DDTW-Great way to open the show. I wonder why they dont put the screens up for the opening song. I was in 333, and I felt that it was a little too quiet. Maybe its just me but i want them to pump the volume up a little bit.
Cornbread-Great song and I like the new bridge section thingy. The only complaint about it is I really liked the "ohhh yeah, you know you love me" part that he used to do, and Dave didnt do it. But that little laugh thingy was fuckin sick.
FTWII- When I was there I was like meh about it. When I went home and listened to it, its probably my favorite song out of all the new material. I love it and it makes me want to buy the album so much more than before i listened to it.
Raven- Completely taken off guard. While one of the reasons why i love seeing this band live is the unpredictability of songs that will be played, even I was like holy shit. I loved it.
YMDT- Great song, but I think it lacked just a little bit of passion.
Spaceman- I think its pretty cool.
Dancing Nancies- How can you complain.
Pig- Great to hear again, interesting to see that they were going to play Granny instead they switched.
Melissa- Now, Im not complaining, but i was a little bit confused about this. Gregg Allman just comes out for one song and then bounces. Nevertheless it was great to have the opportunity to see him.
Recently- I thought it was pretty good.
SDL- I personally love this song. Yet again, i kinda wish that they would have put the mic volume up a little bit, it was hard to hear dave over the croud.
#27- I love this song. I thought it was a great performance.
Why I Am- Great song. The croud was into it big time and I could hear the references to Roi, and its beautiful.
Ants-Awesome as usual.
#41- Great
Two Step- This has to be the highlight of the show for me. I loved the ending. I really loved the ending.
Sister- Meh. I would have loved Halloween. Not reasonable for the first show of a tour but whatevs.
Tripping Billies- First time hearing it and it was pretty good.

Why I Am - the best new song! i freakin' love it

Ants Marching - this was an awesome surprise

#41 - jeff and tim were unbelievable

Two Step - tim and carter.... just wow. carter is not human

Tour opener and I was pummped for this one. Dave and the boys did not disapoint. Maybe because it was the first show or maybe 'Roi was in their heads, but a lot of the songs had some extra zip on them. It's hard to explain, but if you were there, you know what I am talking about. Pig, Nancies, Ants & Recently were all fantastic and probably some of the best versions I've heard in a long time. They finally played "Receently" as a whole song! It was my 41st DMB show and right on cue, they played #41, which was unbelievable. I am getting tired of DDTW as an opener, but So Damn Lucky is really becoming great live, especially with Tim. The new songs sounded really good, but I am probably going to need to hear the studio version of "Spaceman" to really get into it.
Looking forward to Jersey tonight and then Jones Beach over the summer!

Sweet melissa was legit, new songs were awesome. Roots were great. Jeff Coffin pulled his weight and then some. One of the better shows I've seen so far.

This show was amazing, considering all that the band went through last year I couldn't have asked for a more graceful return to the stage. I was moved at the core of my being.

Think we are all falling in love with Cornbread and YMDT!!! 2 great songs....Recently was SO AMAZING...I love that song. highlight of my night!..the lyrics are great, can tell its an 'old' one!!! Raven was a very sweet surprise!
DDTW...hmmm, like it but too predictable. The new stuff sounds real good. Solid close to end set.
Encore was so so....just too short!!!
Boys looked great and sounded great!
ps...thanks to Gregg Allman for hanging out!

Very cool hearing Raven and also kicking off the tour at the Garden. Love the new tunes, Funny The Way It Us, Why I Am, and Spaceman. It was one of my highlights when Greg Allman came out with the band and performed Melissa.

Incredible, as it was my first show. I had been a casual fan for several years, but recently got really into it. My friend, who has seen Dave over 40 times, wound up with an extra pair of tickets a couple hours before and gave them to me. What a night.

Words can't describe. This was my first MSG show, and the atmosphere was incredible, and then the band puts on a show like this. Raven and Pig were shockers, Greg Allman was an amazing suprise, and Ants-41-Two Step may be the best run I have ever experienced. Besides a subpar encore, this show was perfect.

Not bad, but a very average show. Understandable since it was the 1st show of the tour. Crowd was really into it which is nice to see. Love the new songs.

Heard today, May 2017, that Greg Allman had just died, so came back to this site to read my review from 2009, only to find that I didn\'t complete one, very remiss of me....! Only time I ever saw Greg Allman, but still remember it very well, good version of Melissa. Happy times and happy memories.

Overall I loved this show .. MSG had so much energy built up in it I thought the roof was going to blow off. The long 41 was my fav. part of the show, however I was a huge fan of Pig. Cofflin did a tremendous job, def. underestimated his skills and Tim Reynolds is just a legend esp. when holding a guitar in his hands. See you guys @ SPAC , Hershey and Scranton !!!
