Dave Matthews Band
In-store performance & CD signing
Borders Book’s & Music
Bryn Mawr, PA
April 10, 1993
I think Dave & the band came to my store on this date back in 1993.
I was the music manager for Borders in Bryn Mawr, PA from 1991 thru 1999 and we had tons of bands play in our music space. One of my co-workers (Tom) saw Dave play in New York the day before & was very impressed by what he heard. He asked them to stop by the store to drop off some “Remember Two Things” CDs on their way back to VA. I listened to Tom’s CD and thought the band was amazing!
The band arrived in the early part of Saturday afternoon (2 or 3?) with the CDs. Initially, I told Dave we’d take 10-15 copies & order more through Bama Rags when we sold them. He asked if I wanted the guys to play a few songs acoustically before they left & I said absolutely… I made an announcement over the store’s loudspeaker that a band from Charlottesville, VA called the Dave Matthews Band was going to perform an impromptu set in our music department & that they should stop by to check them out… Folks started to wander in; a couple dozen at first, but the crowd grew during the set to about 70 to 80 people!
They played a short set which I recall as Ants Marching, Tripping Billies, Satellite, One Sweet World, Best of What’s Around and Two Step.
Immediately when they started playing, people there started buying the CD! By the time they finished their set, we had sold 50-some copies of “Remember Two Things”! I paid Dave for the copies we sold and had him leave 100 copies instead of the original 15… Even then, we ordered more copies SEVERAL times from Bama Rags before “Under the Table” came out in 1994… When that CD was finally released on RCA, we had 127 pre-orders for the CD! I gotta tell you, that really shocked the buyers at Borders headquarters in Ann Arbor, Michigan! They were originally going to send us 3 copies of the “Under the Table” CD & see how sales went! : )
Still one of the great “right place – right time” moments I had in my retail career…
Hope this helps to fill in the info for this date…
Thanks,
Sean Hickey
