Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds|
February 6, 1999
Jorgensen Auditorium - University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT
When I saw that D&T were touring again after a year off (due to the BTCS sessions), I knew I had to see a show. It just happened that our Spring Pacing Break at Lehigh happened to fall when D&T were at UCONN. Since I'm a native of CT, and I had friends at UCONN, I knew I had to go. My friend got me tickets about 3/4 of the way back on the floor, and I drove up to Storrs from Farmington in a developing snow storm. We got to the show just as the lights in the hall were dimming and settled in for what I thought was going to be a relaxing, chill evening with a lot of Davespeak. We did get a lot of Davespeak, but the drunk frat boys in the upper level would not chill out, which hurt the mood. Dave even commented on it a couple times. We heard about the Bonobo monkeys, Dave's stint as a nude model for art classes, and Afrin nasal spray. It was a solid mix of DMB material with a few hints at new stuff (Lillywhite/Busted Stuff). Tim was exceptional, as always, and his songs didn't get enough respect. The cover of the Lyle Lovett song was catchy. Of course, the biggest moment came in the encore, when Dave said he had a friend he'd like to bring out. We saw a shadow of what had to be a very large man...and it turned out to be JOHN POPPER! That was awesome. I actually waited outside the venue after the show and got Popper to waive to me from across the street before he sped off in his red Jeep Cherokee. This was before he lost all the weight, and he barely fit in the front passenger seat. On some recordings of this show I've been immortalized, as friends have told me it's my voice calling out "I Love You Dave" at the end of OSW. I wasn't drunk, but I probably did it anyway - a mutual kind of love and respect you know...
Dave and Tim! Freshman year of college . . . high times.
