Who likes to SLAP SOME BASS MAN? (Tribute to Stefan thread)

So I think Stefan is the least talked about member of this band. Always has been always will be. He's more or less the quiet one outside of his twitter rants. Which he has a right to, but has come off tone deaf more often than not.

However, I think he's phenomenal at what he does. His playing has pretty much improved year over year and I think the last 5 to 7 years has been his absolute best. The grooves he comes up with. The ability he has to lock in with Carter. He can really take a song up a notch or really really down when it needs to. (Think the Stone). He doesn't get the cred that Carter does for being a phenom, but the guy really is. I love what he has contributed to the band, and it's really easy to not notice, until you do. Once you pay attention, it's hard to miss what he's doing.

Cheer to Stefan.

I agree, I’ve long thought that Fonz is the one member who continues to improve and become more creative each year. People sometimes shit on him, but he just keeps getting better at what he does.

On the other hand, Tim’s full time presence has had the opposite affect on Dave’s guitar, for the most part.

Let's be honest, people like to give shit to just about every member of this band. I've never seen a fanbase who actively shits on the members of the band they claim to love more than the hardcore DMB fans. Here's just some of the stuff going around:

Boyd sucks, always has and always did. Never liked him and thank glad he's gone. Miss the violin..

Tim is too loud. He's ACTUALLY not good. We were tricked by Dave into thinking he was good but it's a lie. He takes over the sound and never was really a part of the OG band. Should go away.

Dave writes shitty songs, he hasn't written more than 5 good songs since 2000. His voice sucks now. He plays too many covers. He's not creative anymore. He's lazy.

Carter is old. He can't play long songs. He's lost a step. He's not good anymore.

    Fonz is an asshole.

Buddy should never have replaced boyd, bring back Butch, even though Butch kind of sucked too. Buddy sucks the most of all 3. He plays like shit and is overbearing expect when he's too quiet.

RR is a squealing dog whistle. He needs to go. Haven't liked him since he joined the band and hate what he's done to the core sound for the last 17 years. He should go.

Jeff Coffin IS good, but just not good with this band. He doesn't really fit the sound and sounds like shit a lot. He should go.

In all reality, everyone here thinks everyone should go and has said it or saying it currently in some regard. I agree, Fonz gets the least amount of credit for his creativity and overall playing, but I don't think any band member is worth talking negatively about at 31 years in. I've decided to take it or leave it, and I'm taking it until I can't anymore. I think they all sound top notch right now and have found a way to play with each other that's unlike any other iteration of this band.

I don't think Tim has diminished Dave's playing. I think there was a while were Dave took a back seat around 2009-11, just because he could on songsl like Seven or Sledgehammer. I think Dave has really upped his chops the last couple years. If you listen to 03-7, he's a bit more sloppy in comparison to what he's doing now.

    Yup 100%

He absolutely needed to go. They’re so much better with Buddy now.

Fonzi is a phenomenal pocket bass player, but his solos and intros have always left much to be desired. '98/'98 intros to W'tower were okay, but his Crush intros have always been aimless.

The only Stefan solo that I can recall enjoying is his intro to Crush on LT13.

But anyways, to the spirit of the thread title, Stefan is fantastic. The sync between him and Carter is what drives the songs this band plays. I absolutely love some of the funkiness Stefan has brought to Seek Up in recent years. I was listening to YNK studio a moment ago; Stefan laid down a nice track for that song.

He isn't a soloist or even "lead" bass player like Geddy Lee, Les Claypool, etc. So yeah, he isn't the flashiest bassist, and his solos often meander. But his bass playing is top notch. He has a knack for groove and he writes some amazing bass lines. Even on slower songs, Stefan is subtly kicking ass and he incorporates a wide variety of techniques (uses harmonics frequently, tastefully pops and slaps when appropriate, also plays 4, 5, 6 string, fretless, upright, uke bass, you name it) As a bass player myself, Stefan is absolutely one of my favorite bassists.

The coolest solo I've seen him do is the intro to Crush from LT45 (6.29.2013)

And thing is, he can be flashier and shred leads if he really wanted. He doesn't show off his full array of licks for sure. The dude is a badass.

The mixes often do Stefan no favors. Something I always notice when I listen to Phish or the Dead is how Mike and Phil are always loud and clear in the mix. You can usually hear everything they're doing. But with DMB - especially in the last 10-15 years - Stefan is often way too low, to the point he's almost inaudible. So he might be doing something really cool and creative, but you'll never hear it because he's totally drowned in the mix.

I can't say I agree. He's pretty loud on most mixes and if you see them live, BASS is not missing from the show.

If anything Dead & Co sounds like a band without any bass on half their tunes. Seriously need to turn Oteil up. You can watch him play sometimes and hear nothing.

The thing with the bass especially is that it can kinda fade into the background so you're not really conscious of what it is that he's doing unless you specifically listen for him. But every time I do that, I come away with a new appreciation for what he does -- definitely the most underrated member of the band, I think. Back in early 2021, he put out a bunch of videos on Twitter that highlight his playing well: #FonzBass

Yes! To me that's good bass playing. You SHOULDN'T be paying attention to it. But if you narrow on Stefan, it's real good. Kind of like McCartney. Beatles tunes have so much good bass going on, but unless I'm listening intently for it, I'm just grooving to the great tunes.
