Great Song no matter what it is about. I haven't read the whole thread, so someone might have already mentioned this possibility, but here goes:
I think when Dave says god he refers to women, perhaps his wife.
With the "Save your sermons" parts, it seems Dave is referring to clergy or the moral majority who try to tell others how to live.
"If you never flew, why would you cut the wings off a butterfly?" Could be a metaphor for: Just because you are celibate, doesn't mean you should force your moral standards on me (or others).
"I'll be right here, lying in the hands of god" AKA my wife.
Further, with Dave's obsession with giving oral sex (as seen in Seven and Shake Me, not to mention Hunger), or sex in general, "For just a taste you could own me" could be his way of offering sexual submissiveness.
Who knows though. I am probably imposing my biased veiwpoint of disregard for religion and obsession with my gf. That's why I love Dave though; there can be this many wildly varying messages taken from one song.
