Re: Lying in the Hands of God...

def think this is about the grieving process and all the emotions you feel at the time...if you've lost someone close to you i think you may be able to agree

I need to point out some Carter Beauford. This guy just blows me away on this song.

    First verse, 0:27 to 0:30.

Second verse, 1:16 to 1:37. The guy is just tap tap tappin' away at what seems like whatever.

His work on the 3rd chorus is one of my favorite studio Carter moments of all time. Starting at 3:10 with the chimes, his background vocals on 'save your sermons' and 'knew what I feel' are heavenly, and the drumming in 3:23 to 3:26.

    YES.

I've thought the same since the first time I heard this lyric. Seems obvious?

Beautiful song. Didn't get into it until seeing it live, and it's also my wife's favorite.

I wish Dave would write the meaning of his songs on his website. But I guess that would take the fun out of it and we wouldn't be able to understand the song as we see it. But still, I'm always dying to know what he was thinking when he wrote each song.

I'm glad you say this. We want to know what he was thinking, not necessarily what the song is about, because it is different for each person. Nice word choice.

edit: First post I see. Welcome to Ants.

Re: Lying in the Hands of God...

Great Song no matter what it is about. I haven't read the whole thread, so someone might have already mentioned this possibility, but here goes:

I think when Dave says god he refers to women, perhaps his wife.

With the "Save your sermons" parts, it seems Dave is referring to clergy or the moral majority who try to tell others how to live.

"If you never flew, why would you cut the wings off a butterfly?" Could be a metaphor for: Just because you are celibate, doesn't mean you should force your moral standards on me (or others).

"I'll be right here, lying in the hands of god" AKA my wife.

Further, with Dave's obsession with giving oral sex (as seen in Seven and Shake Me, not to mention Hunger), or sex in general, "For just a taste you could own me" could be his way of offering sexual submissiveness.

Who knows though. I am probably imposing my biased veiwpoint of disregard for religion and obsession with my gf. That's why I love Dave though; there can be this many wildly varying messages taken from one song.

Re: Lying in the Hands of God...

Who really knows? But, I will venture my guess....

It's a combination of topics, rolled into one (drugs, love, life, death, religion....).

I feel that a big part of this deals with the loss of Roi (along with previous loved ones). Dealing with loss in his own way and not wanting to hear anyone preach to him about his views.

"Now the floor is the ceiling".....having your life flipped upside down....by loss or by substances/love you are using to deal with grief.

However, when all is said and done...Dave is saying "f@ck it".....because "Ill be....right here....LITHOG".....enjoying what brings him peace (vices, love, memories, music, personal beliefs).....

Really one of the more beautifully written songs (musically and lyrically). The song is the most "DMB" ish of this album.

Haven't listen to this song (or much DMB) lately. Might have to make a nice playlist in the near future to jam out to.

Edit: One of my favorite DMB songs of the last decade, for sure.

Having seen this song a couple times live, the jam really doesn't do anything for me. The version in C'Ville just dragged on and on. I like what Carter does in the jam but that's about it. I really like the lyrics though.
