For the anniversary of Leroi’s passing I thought it might be a good idea to do a Listening Party in honor of his life and the music he gave us. I was trying to think of which show we could listen to together that would really represent what he accomplished and gave us. It is at this point that I realized one show would be impossible to truly honor Leroi, and that we should do an LP Marathon instead with multiple shows that truly highlight his talents.
If you don't know how an LP works it's simple. Log on to Ants and find this thread (It'll be the one at the top of the page). Pull up the show you are going to listen to on iTunes, or drop it in the CD player and press play at the designated time. Then feel free to chat about the music, talk about Leroi, or anything else your heart desires.
So here are the selections for the LP marathon:
-The LP Marathon will start and end with a playing of “#34” from “Under The Table And Dreaming”
-Live at Red Rocks ’95: I think this a great show all around that showcases a lot of Leroi’s talents, plus it has a great mix and most everyone should have it already
-11-02-93 (Live at Trax): If you have never heard this show please participate in this specific section of the LP marathon. This is one of the band’s best early shows and Leroi in ’93 was at the top of his game. His solo on “Lie In Our Graves” is superb. This show is available (in mastered form) at this
link (Thanks ZachR for having the greatest sig ever)
-Listener Supported: This choice almost needs no introduction. Right off the bat with a great “Heartbeat Intro” you can tell Leroi is at the top of his game. All the performances on this version are very solid, but Leroi’s flute and sax solos on “#41” make it the easy highlight. Also most everyone should have this show.
-9-18-00 (Riverport Amphitheater): Coming up with this list, I knew that a good 2000 show would be necessary to complete Leroi’s legacy. There are quite a few songs he shines on here such as “Grey Street”, “JTR”, “Raven”, and an “All Along The Watchtower” solo. Plus Bela Fleck comes out for a few songs as well as Jeff Coffin on Bartender then finally the entire Flecktones group on “#41” and “Tripping Billies”. See PM details to get this show.
-8-19-08 (Staples Center): Granted, I know this set doesn’t have the Leroi’s playing on it, and I was debating switching this show for another, for a long time. But I think it is important to listen to the same concert that the band put on in honor of Leroi. They played some of his favorite songs, and they played them damn well even with all the emotion. This concert shows how that power of the music that he was so instrumental in creating, helped them grieve and move on to continue to play great music. This show is available to stream on liog.org at this
link(Need an account to stream. Free and easy).
So here is the schedule (with start and approximate end times):
11:00 am EST: Start #34 (Studio)
11:10 am EST: Start RR’95 (Ends at 1:16 pm)
1:30 pm EST: Start 11-02-93 (Ends at 4:06 pm)
4:30 pm EST: Start Listener Supported (Ends at 6:18 pm)
6:30 pm EST: Start 9-18-00 (Ends at 9:00 pm)
9:30 pm EST: Start 8-19-08 (Ends at 12:18 am)*
12:25 pm EST: Start #34 (Studio)*
*Yes, I am aware that it goes into the next day, but the really was no way to get around it in terms of scheduling (I didn’t want to start too early).
So hopefully there are enough people participating that if someone stops by in the middle of a show everyone can let them know where they are, so that person can fast forward to catch up. Also if you need some of these shows (Will not distribute any official releases…if you don’t have them, go get them, because they are great) then feel free to PM me all today. However, once it gets to Monday I will be without Internet access until the day of the LP Marathon, so sending me a PM then will be futile. Some people you can PM about getting these shows after Monday are highlander4, davidhamrick10, and weller3377 (all of them helped me pick the shows and organize so thanks to them for that). Also once you get a show please make it known in the thread so people can PM you to help distribute, or if you see a person in the thread asking for a show please PM said show. Also if you need any help downloading the shows or working with the links feel free to PM the same individuals for assistance. Remember 11-02-93 and 8-19-08 can be found at the links posted above.
Even if you cannot participate, please do not be discouraged to leave any thoughts, memories, or messages for Leroi as well in this thread. I love hearing some of the fan’s stories about his influence on them.
Hope to see a lot of people in here Wednesday!
