I think you're grossly underqualified to open a thread like this considering you are a new fan and never heard Roi. Of course you love Jeff.

And talking about being upset about the loss of leroi, you probably did not even know that he passed when it happened. You found out years later.
WTF?

OP I support your post, well said

if jeff coffin underplays.. idk what shows ive been attending
and i didn't realize you had to have qualifications to open a thread, that being said, i think the OP did a nice job of writing his initial post, it was a little over the top like worshipping jeff coffin, saying thank god for him, but still i think it was well written content wise.

You two should just bang and get it over with.

You both joined the forums after Roi died, so clearly that means neither of you ever heard or saw him play, and you were never truly fans.

I think when they hit that rough spot, it was almost a way of helping them be grateful for each other and all the work they had done, and really helped them get back into their A game.

As tragic as LeRoi's death was, it has undoubtedly made the band stronger, and closer, and I think a lot can be said for that.

I see your thinking, but I disagree.

When Roi passed, Butch had just left and Tim had just come back. They were really starting to get their shit back together. Roi's passing came at a time when, IMO (and again, none of us are in the band, so we don't know), they had just gotten back on their feet and were ready to conquer.

I do, however, think that if Roi had passed in 05-07, there there is a very good chance that there would be no Dave Matthews Band today.

absolutely agree, maybe not 05.. but 06-07 were really tumultuous times for the band, dave supposedly called it quits, and something like that would give them a real reason to quit.

i really dont like the way jeff plays, i mean i can respect that hes very talented and technical and all that but i mean id rather hear the sweet sweet melodies that roi played than the jumbled aggressive note attacks that jeff plays

but you said you don't like Jeff or Rashawn...and as we all know, Roi is dead.

honestly i'm just happy someone is filling in for deceased Roi at this point. to constantly try and compare the two and always feel nostalgic to the point of disappointment every day would give me a brain aneurism. jeff will never be like Roi because no one person plays an instrument the same as someone else does

but i think if the primary horn was sax, jeff would flourish. he'd have more room.

o if thats what you were saying by "sax by default" then yeah it's hard to disagree with that. i guess it is what it is though. Rashawn taking a little bit of a back seat on the layering stuff they've been doing now in billies, ants, OSW etc.. wouldn't be a bad thing at all.

My first show was 8/22/98. Not everyone joins the forum right away.

And my point is just that I don't think someone should be posting about how they love Jeff if they never even heard Roi play. And they certainly should acknowledge the fact that they never heard Roi. Everyone here is entitled to their opinion. I just think that a little humility on the part of newer fans would be appreciated.

Yeah I agree, it's too bad there isn't some sort of technology that would have allowed us to have recorded Roi playing music so everyone would be able to hear his musical voice.

Agreed. I hear all of these things about him, but the only sort of exposure I've had of Roi are the pictures. But by looking at the pictures, I'm able to imagine the sweet sounds that must be coming out of his sax.

How do you know OP hasn't seen a show with Roi? I still don't get that part. You said not everybody joins the forums right away, I am proof positive of that, but how do you know that's not the case with OP?

I wondered the same thing, but the OP has the shows he's seen in his sig. Valid question, though.

Roi will always sound better on the songs he helped write for obvious reasons and he's irreplaceable. Jeff will sound better on the new songs. I really feel this album could be huge for him, and really showcase his talent. I love the Mu'tet.

Thank you for the support. I hate the older members who have no room for newer ones. Dave wouldn't want us fighting on here. He would want us to celebrate Roi. And I remember te exact place of where I was at when I found out.

If anything Dave would want less fighting and more memes.

Arite. I concede. I am sorry for those that i offended, I didn't mean to cause fighting or anything like that. You have to be sympathetic. I've been a fan for a long long time and have listened to the band grow and develop.

It's hard for me not to grow attached to the past, to the reasons I fell in love with the band. To who Dave used to be. And when i see newer fans that love the band for different reasons or I feel like dont respect us that have been fans for so long I become agitated.

But I realize that you are all entitled to your opinions. That there is no right and wrong, only different ways of appreciating the band. not only that, but i appreciate and welcome all newer fans that love the band that I love.

Just realize how hard it is for us to see the band change and drift away from the sound that brought us in.
