DMB Foil Poster Question. What Did I Just Buy?

Hey, I just got back from the DMB concert at the Target Center. I've been to 6-7 DMB shows now and have collected a poster for each show. I grabbed a poster when the gates opened. It was hard to hear the lady behind the table. She said do you want foil? I said sure as long as it was for today's show. Which of course it was. My jaw about hit the ground when I noticed my card was being processed for $160. I'm glad I didn't know the total prior. I just saw the poster sign that said $60. Apparently they had non-foil posters available for that price. I had no idea that the foil was an additional $100!!! So what did I get and why is the foil so much more expensive? I would have been happy with the $60 poster. I saw non-foil poster show up on E-bay tonight that is numbered out of 150 posters. Would this foil poster be a smaller run? I not exactly sure what I just picked up. Thanks for the help!

Yes it’s a smaller run. You’ll generally have no problem selling the foil print if you’d prefer to seek out a regular one.

Foils have been added at most DMB shows over the past 2 years or so as a flashier version of the regular show posters. They have a much more limited print run and are more expensive. Same image as the regular show poster with additional foil that can dramatically enhance the image and in other instances doesn’t make as much as an impact.
As far as I know they have been available during the fall tour at each show a cost of $150.00 plus applicable sales tax with print runs of 150. I hope most of the additional cost goes to the artist but don’t really know if that is in fact the case. They usually sell out quickly so many concert goers never see them being offered for sale at merch. I suggest you do a Google or eBay search to see what they look like and how they compare to the regular show posters.
I picked one up at the Seattle show and IMHO that poster is among my personal all-time fav’s. The visual impact of the foil varies widely depending on the poster image and are often far more striking to see in person as opposed to a photo.

how is it getting the foil home? i imagine much more stress rolling that guy up than a regular poster, or not really?

i know you are supposed to reverse roll it, print on the outside. not sure if any tricks to flattening

I really do not suggest this with foils unless you're also bringing a layer of tissue paper. Rolling the foil paper face out can potentially scratch it up on the kraft paper. If you're using a show tube without kraft paper absolutely do not roll any print face out.

Just handle it carefully, avoid touching the front of the print. If you get fingerprints or skin oil on there good luck getting it back to looking just right. They flatten just like normal pics, again just want to be extra careful with the paper because any scratches or flaws will stand out a lot more on foil paper.

there you have it! i read not rolling it reversed could cause the print to flake off the poster but i assume if its not going to be rolled long it wont matter?

I have bought a number of foils at shows. Always rolled them (carefully) in the same manner as a regular show poster. Printed image in. Never a problem. I have been a long time collector of old vintage posters and have never sent out or received any poster in a tube rolled image side out. I recommend against that.

Thanks for all the replies and the explanation about the foil poster. I guess I'll have one foil poster among my other DMB posters. I'll be a little more suited for the next show on what I'm doing. Thanks everyone!
