You can hear the effect in the broadcast as they're always chiming in with 'for those of you who are new to F1.....' and then explaining some technical rule or feature of the cars.

Leclerc won't even start after winning the pole at Monaco due to left drive shaft issues. His wreck at the end of qualifying yesterday was absolutely heartbreaking.

And then Hamilton's car drives straight into turn 1 on the restart, and he gets passed by the field

    Quote:
The Formula One World Championship, already extremely popular outside the U.S., is setting TV ratings records and drawing in new fans thanks in large part to "Drive to Survive," a docuseries on Netflix that goes behind the scenes to chronicle the on- and off-track drama surrounding what is globally considered the premiere autosport.

Six races into the 23-event season, ESPN ratings are averaging 911,000 viewers, up 50 percent from the 2020 season and 36 percent from 2019, according to data from the sports channel. Viewership for the French Grand Prix on June 20 hit 1.1 million viewers, the biggest audience in the U.S. since the 2019 Canadian Grand Prix that was broadcast on ABC. By comparison, first-round games for the NBA Playoffs averaged 3 million viewers.

The anecdotal evidence of the Netflix effect — its reputation as the most powerful single platform in modern media — is ample. Netflix is stingy with its viewership data, but its ability to turn box-office bombs into at-home hits is well chronicled. A spokesperson for the company said the most recent season, its third, attracted the largest audience yet.

Fun having an actual battle this season coinciding with this.

My buddy and I are kicking around the idea of grabbing tickets to the practice round for the race in Austin. Practice tickets are like $50 and we'd be able to see the track and see all the stars without having to buy a weekend pass for $400.

I thought Lewis did Max dirty in real time, but wasn't as cut and dry on the replay. Seemed more incidental just jockeying for space on a similar line.

What did everyone think of the sprint? I thought it was pretty fun.

What a weird track for F1. It’s like Brands hatch mixed with the Charlotte Roval. The banked hairpin is really cool. Will probably be a boring race.

The halo legitimately saved Hamilton's life. I like Verstappen less and less with each passing race.

But their misery is my guy's triumph! It's been far too long since we've seen a shoey.

Hell of a race and so happy for Danny. I’ll be happier when Lando is on top of the podium

Glad no injuries on the accident but I’m still on team Max. Both of them knew that if they gave way they would never see that position again since passing is near impossible unless your name is Valteri. This was not nearly as careless as Hamilton’s move in Silverstone which he does so eloquently anytime racing gets racy. Did it twice to Albon too. Looking forward to the day his reign is over and I hope it’s next year.

I know this is an old post but there were comparisons on Lewis’ racing line for the rest of the race - he did do him dirty and even has the tactless balls to wave his flag around when he put his rival in the hospital. Classless is an understatement.

Lewis is an incredible driver - he really is. But he’s so good he can cause an accident while making it look like an incident and he gets the benefit every single time

Not getting into the Lewis v Max debate lol. As a huge McLaren fan, I hope they take each other out every race and Norris wins the championship .

Loved this weekend so much. Always really liked Ricciardo so I was very happy to see him get it done again. Many wins for Norris are coming too.

After seeing another photo of the crash, Lewis got very lucky.

It might just be angles, but the Indycar solution looks to provide better protection from a top impact too. Red Bull made the thing for IndyCar, so I’m sure they could roll them out by 2023.

    *Miami has entered the chat...*

My buddy and I punted on Austin this year due to an already clogged up schedule this month. Miami in May however...

My 31st bday is Thursday the 5th and the race is on the 8th. Never been to Miami before either... Leggo!

In terms of tickets for the event or the travel/accommodations? Hotels in Miami for that weekend are already being booked up and are going for $200 a night. We might stay in Ft. Lauderdale or even WPB and drive down each day to avoid some of the Miami cost.

    Re: Formula 1 Discussion

As time goes on I am starting to dislike Max Verstappen more and more. I am not totally in the dislike column yet, but it is approaching that zone. It sucks because I would like a new champion, but he just says things that rub me the wrong way.

This week he refused to be interviewed by Netflix moving forward because he felt they portrayed him as the villain with creating fake rivalries and that the show was only to boost American viewership. I totally understand the first part, but I also feel a simple conversation with Netflix could have addressed that issue. To the second part, it comes off as a little anti-American at worst but is definitely selfish at best. F1 is becoming one of the most popular sports in the world largely due to American viewers and drive to survive. F1 growing only helps Max but he seems a little short sided and selfish in his way of thinking. I totally understand him not liking how he is portrayed, but “quitting” the show is dumb. I also find that he comes off as very cocky and ungrateful in most of his interviews.

To clarify, I have really liked Max since he came into F1, but my views towards him are slowly changing. Maybe if he wins the title he will be more humble and relaxed?

Max is making himself the villain by opting out of the show and acting the way he does. I'm here for the pettiness. Creates a better narrative and more drama. Big fan of Max being a contrarian.
