Yes. When I think about MJ's legacy, that game isn't high on my priority list. It's the body of work, not a specific moment. Ridiculous to dock an athlete's bullshit legacy meter because they were mentally exhausted handling the strain that NONE of us would be able to fathom handling. Give me a break.

One former US elite gymnast I talked to said that if it was someone other than Simone Biles who had made that same error, they would have certainly blown a knee, at minimum. Another said if it had happened to her instead of Simone, “I probably would have ended up paralyzed.”

The reason Simone biles is the best ever, and I haven’t seen it mentioned as part of this discussion, is she has four skills named after her and does these and other moves that other gymnasts don’t even attempt.

Her skill allows her to perform elements other women simply can’t do and that is why she is the greatest ever.

    Also this,

Which is part of the reason she is never scored properly

If you think her stepping away because of her mental health affects her legacy you are the kind of people who can get bent. Athletes are human and are put on such high pedestals that when they show off their very human flaws people over react. She is the greatest female gymnastic regardless of Tokyo

Sunisa Lee, an 18-year-old from Minnesota, will be the Olympic all-around champion.

No Simone Biles and the United States' gold-winning streak survives.

Coincidentally, I got assigned a story yesterday talking to local athletes and coaches about mental health awareness. Had a fantastic chat with a coach about everything (helped that he was a psychology major in college, which I didn't know, just knew he would be a fantastic source).

Huge is an understatement. This is gonna blow up like concussions did about a decade ago, I think. The amount of people I talked to today so enthusiastically willing to talk about it was shocking to me.

    That’s great!!

The amount of people who think Simone Biles owes them a gold medal can go fuck themselves.

The Simone Biles/Michael Jordan comparisons are fascinating to me because MJ quit on his team a few weeks before the 93-94 season was about to start due to mental stress. Yes, he eventually came back after a long break from the game, which improved his legacy. Who knows? Maybe Biles competes in the individual events or gives it another go in Paris in three years. A potential Biles comeback would do a lot to repair whatever damage some people think she has done to her legacy just as Jordan's eventual return allowed people to move past him unexpectedly quitting the Bulls in 1993.

I wanted Simone Biles to throw caution to the wind and perform when she isn’t mentally 100% so I can feel better about my country. Who cares if she breaks her neck? It’ll be worth it for the Stars and Stripes!!!!
