Marvel would indeed be wise to try to be more like the DC movies.

I can't tell if you're being serious (I think you are) but I actually agree.

Contrary to what people may perceive about me, I actually do like Marvel characters, a lot. I just hate the way they've been executed and utilized. Many Marvel comics are actually quite serious in tone and it works quite well there.

It's a shame they don't have access to their full roster of characters and that they entered into horrible rights deals all those years ago. Would love to have seen the X-Men and Avengers team up on the big screen.

I was definitely not being serious. Although I don't disagree with your overall sentiment and I wouldn't mind Marvel taking more chances and ramping up the stakes a little more, and I do give kudos to DC for trying, I don't think DC is hitting the mark at all and so would never say that Marvel should try to do things "more like DC".

I sort of feel like DC's claim to making more serious movies stems from one character, Batman, and that what often goes unspoken is that Batman as a character lends himself to darker stories. Batman has had some very successful movies, and critically acclaimed with the Nolan trilogy, and it seems to have created a philosophy that all stories DC tells should be dark in nature. I adore the Nolan Batman movies, but it doesn't mean it's the right mood for Superman - and it's certainly not the right mood for Spider-Man and some other characters under Marvel's banner. Not that their movies have to be the laughfests they are, and they could certainly up the stakes, but I sometimes think DC fans think dark and serious = deep just because DC's most popular character at the moment is very rooted in dark and serious, and has been featured in some deep movies recently.

But honestly, my issues with BvS have almost nothing to do with tone. The dark and gloomy critique that I see thrown around about that movie didn't bother me in the slightest.

I just saw it tonight, not really a Marvel comic reader as a kid. Before the first GoTG movie I had no idea who they were or what to expect, kinda thought I'd hate it tbh and couldn't have been more pleasantly surprised. Absolutely loved it so I knew heading into this second one they had huge shoes to fill. I had a complete blast! Might've liked it more than the second if that's possible. Expected to be let down but I wasn't at all. But then again, I'm not a comic book guy so I was able to enjoy it at face value for what it was. But I loved it, laughed my ass off and was able to just enjoy the entertaining journey they took us on.

Agreed. I don't give two shits about Iron Fist or Luke Cage. Both those series completely sucked compared to DD. Pissed they wasted time making this instead of season 3 of DD.

just by some light skimming, I see that this thread is getting some reaction posts for Guardians 2. I thought there had been a dedicated thread for the movie already (and I mean for the sequel, not just for the first Guardians thread that I set up back in 2013 or 14) but okay whatever. I'm not even saying anyone definitely has yet, but I just wanted to put it out there be careful please of how spoilery you may make your comments now that the movie's opened up stateside this past Friday0

Movie needed more Sly, too. I'm hopeful he's around more. I wanted a Tango and Cash reunion so bad.

Ant man was good fun; maybe only middle of the road in the MCU, but certainly nowhere near the bottom

I enjoyed Iron Man 3 far more than I did Iron Man 2. I was so disappointed with Iron Man 2. I thought Iron Man 3 was a blast to watch. The Mandarin twist was pretty silly and the more I think about it the more I would have loved to see Kingsley's character develop. He was so evil and menacing in those videos throughout the movie, so to have him turn out to be some actor named Trevor was disappointing. But had they stuck with him he could have been Marvel's only interesting, and reusable, villain in their entire movie universe. I really like the Marvel movies, but holy smokes their villains suck.

Personally...I like Ultron better than the first Avengers. I just think the story and adventure are more entertaining than the first one. I am also a fan of Dr. Strange, but I do think they kind of grazed over the training aspect. The middle of the movie just kind of jumped over his training and the next thing I knew he was a Sorcerer Supreme.

Did you ever see the "one shot" 'All Hail the King'?

I don't necessarily claim that Iron Man 3 is a great or even very good film, but holy crap I just about can't imagine a rational argument suggesting it's worse than Iron Man 2. I mean almost everyone at Marvel who was involved even acknowledges long ago now that IM2 was quite flawed, for multiple reasons. It was too haphazardly slapped together.

I'm not sure if I was a comics reader that I would've been upset with the Mandarin twist or not, although it seems clear to me they simply couldn't have done a straightforward adaptation of the original character, it was such a stereotype. It was definitely gutsy, I can say that. And it is interesting with the "All Hail The King" short in the mix that there is officially a REAL Mandarin person still out there in the MCU.
