Re: Looking for a new career

I received an email from my restaurant's home office yesterday inviting me to apply for a position. I would be the catering manager for the home office and driving that entire business sector. Booking all caterings and wedding events and spreading the orders around throughout the appropriate territories across the company. Starts at $25/hr with potential bonuses based on business growth.

I don't know that I'm over the moon about the job or the pay, but I also don't think I should say no to the opportunity to interview for the position since they reached out to me to apply.

Take the interview with the hopes you can crush it and ask for more money or more of whatever you specifically want. Worst case scenario its not a good fit and you let them know you'd be interested in future opportunities that better fit what you're looking for.

Went ahead and responded to the pre-interview emailed questions and threw my hat into the ring. Going to take Honks advice on trying to crush the interview, maybe ask for more money or clearly outlined bonus structures. If I had to grin and bear it for a year or two until moving into something else, it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.

We're more regional. 10 locations in Colorado and 2 in Arizona. Normally jobs at home office are salary, not sure why this one is not.

Not a bad idea. Probably should make a list of questions and items I want to discuss.

This is always a best practice for any interview/discussion of a new role

My husband does this as a major part of his exec chef job. That hourly number is terrible but once you get a feel for the workload you can ask for a huge bump.

That's my favorite part. That OP is the same OP who thought he impregnated his gf and she already had her period. It turned out to be constipation.

Interview tomorrow at 9am at the home office. Closing my store down tonight, so I'm gonna need a big red bull or a coffee in the AM to be on my A game, but looking forward to asking a lot of questions and seeing what is possible out of this position. Appreciate all the feedback and support from everyone in here.

    Got the job.

Starts at $25 an hour, when it becomes a full time gig it will become salary and the company is trying to bring back bonus structure in Q3.

Want a career? Find a successful tradesman and ask for a job, put in 5 years and you’ll be paid well. I can’t find guys that want to work, it’s like people either want to start at the top or have no motivation. I am a flooring installer, not the most appealing trade, but I make a clear case how you can easily bring home $50 hr after expenses ($100k yr) . I don’t work more that 8-5 and I don’t work weekends. Still just get blank looks when you try to motivate people. I hear the same from plumbers and electricians.

I often wish I would have gone this route out of high school. I don't mind what I do but I can picture myself getting burnt out from desk work at some point.

Sounds like you have to start paying more to start.

I am considering changing careers and getting into software engineering. My brother is doing a 6 month SDET boot camp with no prior experience in the field. He thinks that he can be hirable by the end of the course but I am a bit skeptical. Does anyone do this sort of thing professionally and what kind of advice do you have for someone thinking about getting involved in the field?

I've thought about enrolling in a cyber security boot camp and was generally told it's a waste of money and to learn things on your own.

Maybe it isn't as appealing as you think it is? Sounds like you just need to find the right type of person, one that you won't have to motivate. Not everyone is cut out for that type of work.

Not familiar with this class/certification, but it should help as long as it's a reputable course/certification that people know and respect in the industry. If it provides an actual certification or something you can put on your resume and you are serious about that career path, go for it.

That being said, I'd imagine it would make you/him more hirable for an entry-level type role within that industry. If you can combine a compelling reason on why you think you are a good fit for software engineering and proof that you took the first step in prepping yourself for that new role (boot camp/certification) then I'd think you'd get an opportunity somewhere.

I decided to focus on legal-tech after bouncing around to a few different random sales jobs a respected certification within the industry was the first major step I took. It helped me get my current job for sure - but I knew that was something hiring managers in this line of work were looking for.
