I think DMB straddles the line between a pop rock band with some jazz/funk/soul influences and jam band. They lean on improvisation sometimes, but there's usually a structure to it when they do, the rest of the band vamping on a theme while one individual solos.
I would not call Pearl Jam a jam band. I'd call them a grunge band that became an alternative rock band. They vary their sets greatly, but I don't see a strong jam element to what they do in the vast majority of their songs.

This was truly the most nauseating thing I have ever read on this site. I truly dislike Radiohead and many of their fans have really turned me off from them as well (Not all fans are the same blah blah I know). It makes me sad to read that Dave holds them in such high regard considering that I feel like Radiohead doesn't hold a candle to DMB in the way of impact on music or feeling that they give me (second part being subjective obviously).
As far as impact on popular music goes, my parents know of DMB, but they have no clue who Radiohead are. Yet Radiohead fans will often consider them the greatest gift to music of all time.
I just don't get it. My wife is a Radiohead fan and I have really been trying to get into their music and understand it. I just don't. I think they are pretentious and overrated. I even recently had a Radiohead fan tell me that they hate the Doors because Jim Morrison was too pretentious for them...I literally laughed out laud at this.
I respect that a lot love them and understand that music is largely a "to each their own" thing. Heck, I have tried to explain Phish and even the Grateful Dead to countless numbers of people who are lost on it. So I know music being lost on some happens.
Despite the fact that my dislike for Radiohead literally goes back almost 20 years now, I am still trying to give their music a fair shake. I just borrowed my wife's albums and will give them a thorough listen through. Just every time she has played me something I was turned off by it.
Anyway, DMB > Radiohead was my point.
