The source is still 480i, no matter what you do to it. You can use edge enhancement and sharpening to make it appear a bit more like HD, but side by side it will pale in comparison.

Just look at the DVD vs. the HD broadcast 1080i of LOTR:

http://cornbread.org/FOTRCompare/index.html

Click on each one to bring up full resolution shots of each screengrab and look at the difference - it'll astound you...and the Blu-ray will be even better than this.
Oh okay, I mean I'd never actually seen it myself, but I thought I'd heard from other saying that just in general the upconverting on DVDs looked pretty good. But obviously doby you're the expert here.

Though I still stand by my statement that I'd rather have new Hobbit movies quickier that LOTR on blu-ray

silly question but for PS3...do you have to change anything in the setting for the a standard DVD to upconvert? or is it done automatically?

    thanks.

Yes, it is very important. If you don't, your player will not be able to play DVD's that were made after it was manufactured.

What's the difference between the sony 300 player and the 500 player?

No, you don't have to do anything. As long as you have your PS3 hooked up to HDTV with a HDMI cable, you'll be fine.

    300
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
    Wall-E
    Cars
    The Dark Knight
    Batman Begins
    Lost Season 4
John Mayer - Where the Light Is
Dave and Tim - Radio City
    Iron Man
    I Am Legend

Yes, it's still HD. Was the difference between DVD and VHS noticeable right away? Even though it was more than likely 480i you were watching instead of 480p.

1080p is really not that much of a difference from 720p/1080i. It's still a difference, but it mostly depends on viewing distance.

Planet Earth is absolutely amazing on Blu-Ray. My old roommate bought it as soon as he got his then-new 52" plasma 1080p.

I haven't seen it on Blu-Ray but it looked really good on DVD. The Blu-Ray is supposed to look phenomenal.

    Plus, it's a good movie.

All of the animated movies will look amazing on blu-ray because they can re-render them for the appropriate resolution, plus the color is always so brilliant.

The Best Buy near me has a set up with two identical TVs showing Cars. One on Blu-Ray, one on DVD. I've always known blu-ray was way better, but watching them side by side is incredible.

I just checked blu-ray.com and saw the whole Bourne Trilogy is being released on Blu-Ray on January 27th.

It's quite possible that I will be purchasing a blu-ray player within the next 4-6 weeks.

    1) It's an awesome movie. If you have an appreciation for movies beyond just enjoyment, it is an amazing movie. If you like then purely for enjoyment, it is an awesome movie.

Added bonus, it looks absolutely stunning on Blu-ray.

    2) You need to up your collection. There are some awesome movies on Blu-ray. While Planet Earth is awesome for picture, Dave and Tim is awesome for sound. Pick up a couple more, definitely worth it.

What's the point of having a BD player if you don't have any movies for it?

    cool i'll check it out.

don't get me wrong i will build my collection up, but i don't see any point in buying bluray discs of movies that don't really need to be seen in blue ray(high def). for instance, im counting down the days until Last of the Mohicans comes out on blueray, same with Saving Private Ryan. But i wont drop 30 bucks for a movie like 40-Year Old Virgin that doesn't REALLY need to be seen in high def. know what im sayin'?

OK, so i'm still learning about all the blu ray tech here but one confusion i have is this. I have a 43" tv about 6 years old, no HDMI input. I bought a ps3. I'm using component cables from ps3 and optical audio to my receiver. My tv is capable of 1080i. My brother in law says there is a night/day difference between using HDMI and component/optical audio and should buy a new tv to take advantage of blu ray. Isnt 1080i comparable to 1080p? Looks pretty amazing to me. Do I need a new TV? or am I damn close to as good as it gets?

Alright, well I'll answer what I can. Hooking up your Blu-Ray with an HDMI cable does make a huge difference in the picture. 1080i does compare to 1080p in some ways, but 1080p is the best quality and gets the full amount of picture out of High-def.

I picked up a sony Blu-Ray player this past week for $150.

Also, if you have a HD monitor, you can get a BR drive for your PC for around 50.

don't get me wrong i will build my collection up, but i don't see any point in buying bluray discs of movies that don't really need to be seen in blue ray(high def). for instance, im counting down the days until Last of the Mohicans comes out on blueray, same with Saving Private Ryan. But i wont drop 30 bucks for a movie like 40-Year Old Virgin that doesn't REALLY need to be seen in high def. know what im sayin'?
I understand what you're saying, which also reminds me that Forgetting Sarah Marshall is in my list of owned Blu-rays.

I've just become an HD nerd. I can't really watch anything that's not HD anymore. Every movie I've purchased in the past 5 months or so has been a BD.

Band of Brothers on blue ray for 37.49. They had been out of stock, but looks like they got some more. Can't beat that price for a blue ray set, let alone something from HBO.

DVD is still acceptable, but standard def TV is pretty bad. The only time I watch a non-HD channel is when it's a sporting event (Minnesota Wild or Minnesota Twins) that isn't shown on HD.

Watching Planet Earth on Blu-Ray on a legit TV is most likely the greatest thing in the world.
