What Do You Consider DMB 1/2/3/4/5 ?? Best and Worst of Each Time Period??

I see a lot of posts about DMB 1.0/2.0/3.0 etc....

What do you consider the DMB 1.0 - 5.0 to be???
And what are the Best & Worst Attributes of Each??

Here's What I can think of:

DMB 1.0 - Dave, Carter, Fonz, Boyd, Roi (1992-97) 5 Yrs
DMB 2.0 - Dave, Carter, Fonz, Boyd, Roi + Butch (1998-2004) 6 Yrs
DMB 3.0 - Dave, Carter, Fonz, Boyd, Roi + Butch + RaShawn (2005-07) 2 yrs
DMB 4.0 - Dave, Carter, Fonz, Boyd, Roi + RaShawn + Tim (2008-2008) 2 mos
DMB 5.0 - Dave, Carter, Fonz, Boyd + RaShawn + Tim + Jeff (2009-17) 9 yrs
DMB 5.0 - Dave, Carter, Fonz, + RaShawn + Tim + Jeff + Buddy (2018-) 1 yr

I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on what you liked/disliked about the DMB 1.0-5.0 time periods??

Edit: I didn't include Peter Griesar cause he was barely integral in the band...IMO

    I think you're too nuanced. 2 mos. does not make an era.

    DMB 1.0 = early 90s up to BTCS (1992-1998)
    DMB 2.0 = an obvious sound change with BTCS and Butch, up to RIP LeRoi (1998-2008)
    DMB 3.0 = adding Tim + Jeff + Rashawn (Rashawn and LeRoi only overlapped like a year...) (2008-2018)
    DMB 4.0 = bye bye Boyd + hello Buddy (2018-)

    i thought RaShawn played with DMB and Roi from 2005-2008?? That's why he was the glue between Roi and Jeff??

    You have most of the formations, but you need the Peter years

    91-93 (Griesar)
    93-98 (Core)
    98-05 (Butch)
    06-08 (Rashawn)
    08-16 (Post Roi - Jeff, Tim)
    18 -> (Full Jerk)

    https://www.musictimes.com/articles/...e-matthews.htm

    "Moore was instrumental in getting Ross to join the band in 2007."

    Memory is hazy but I know he played with them starting in 2005, but wasn't made a full-fledged member til 2007. And even pre-2007, his sound was more of a compliment to the sax, rather than its own thing.

    But we're splitting hairs.

    I think the OP has a good breakdown. The only "era I wouldn't qualify as a .0 would be +Tim w/Roi for a bit of the 08 tour. Seems 08-17 would be the era there and 18+ with Buddy is the next enumerated iteration.

    i always think of the band in a dark period from like 2005-2007

    everything slowed down, not much new material, never finished songs...

    isn't this when Dave wrote a letter to each of the band members wanting to break up? i think Leroi's passing was a pivotal moment of do we continue and how do we continue... thank God Tim had just started the tour with them in 08! i remember getting the Warehouse email.

    Hard to believe LeRoi will have been gone 10 years on Aug. 19th

    If you want to break it down further:

    1.0: early 1991
    1.1: mid 1991 to early 1993
    1.2: mid 1993 to 1997
    2.0: 1998 to mid 2005
    2.1: late 2005 to 2007
    3.0: early 2008
    3.1: mid 2008 to 2017
    4.0: 2018

    I would have really liked to see what 4.0 would have done. The small sample size we do have produced some amazing version of songs.
    I'll go 2.0 though because that is the era I tend to listen to most, with 06 shows mixed in as well.

    OP...can you create a poll using an official list of options, allowing us to pick multiples?

    Right now things are murky w/ folks creating their own time periods. I'd go w/ 1, 2, 3, 4.1, 4.2, and 5.

    1.0 = Founding (1991) – Lillywhite Sessions (2000)
    2.0 = Everyday (2001) – End of Butch (2007)
    3.0 = Tim Comes Onboard / Roi's accident and death (2008) – End of Boyd (2017)
    4.0 = Boyd Gone / Buddy Onboard (2018) – ??

    The general consensus of the 2-era is the least enjoyable overall period for me. Butch didn't bring anything to the band that I liked. He filled up all the space and often occupied the same frequencies as Dave. That said, there are some excellent performances from this era, but it's missing the fire and rawness of the first era of the band. Also the venues, that is to say stadiums and playing to crowds in 100K size, killed a lot of dynamics and subtleties that made them band so awesome.

    So it's the original ascension, the post-Butch era, and now the post-Boyd era for me.

    Seems few ants really love the early shows (92-94) Am I wrong in this? I know I’ve posted about that period before, that was the period that first hooked me onto this band. Songs like Help Myself, Typical, Seek Up, Blue Water, Minarets, Nancies, Warehouse, Halloween, Two Step, all the improv jams, etc.

    I hope I’m wrong and there’s more out there that adore this period as much as I do, but it seems most people skip that and go straight for the peak era, 98-2000. I think it’s Daves voice from back then that people dislike, but that’s one of the traits of the early band that is so damn good to me. I absolutely love Dave’s voice on Live Trax 20 and 30 and 37 etc.

    I think you’re right. They were incredibly tight musically back then and Boyd was pretty awesome then too.
    The jams actually had some exploration in them and they seemed like they were hust loving playing music.

    Re: What Do You Consider DMB 1/2/3/4/5 ?? Best and Worst of Each Time Period??

    1.0 1991-2000
    2.0 2001-2007
    3.0 2008-2017
    4.0 2018-????

    This is the only right way. 00-01, 07-08 and 17-18 all marked MAJOR turning points in the band and the band's sound.

    Maybe fans that came in because of BW feel this way, but I think those of us that have been around since the 90's love that period. You could just tell how special these guys were just listening to those early shows. 94-95 was probably the most crucial time of the band, they went from openers to headliners in a span of months from late 94 to early 95. Then 1996 happened.

    Anyone who wants to ignore this part of the band is missing out on what this band really is and was.

    1.0 is the best, Dave's voice be damned. The band was never tighter, more energized, or more innovative than they were from 91 thru 98.

    2.0 has some extremely high points, but the lows are some of the worst time periods for this band.

    3.0 is tough, I like it but it's very different. 08-10 was a really good time and there are a lot of good shows in there, but the shows from 12 to 16 had more hit or miss moments.

    not much to say about 4.0 yet because it's still so new, but I think there's a lot of promise.

    isn't this when Dave wrote a letter to each of the band members wanting to break up? i think Leroi's passing was a pivotal moment of do we continue and how do we continue... thank God Tim had just started the tour with them in 08! i remember getting the Warehouse email.

    Hard to believe LeRoi will have been gone 10 years on Aug. 19th
    Totally agree. I almost gave up on the band. 05 wasn't terrible, but some runs during the sets were awful. Hunger, Time of the season, Dream Girl, Louisiana Bayou, mixed in between Crash, DDTW and Everyday got really old. Dave says at the end of Red Rocks 05 though how it was one of the best tours the band had ever had. Might have just been feelin it in the moment, and those RR shows were stellar.

    06 had some good moments, but you could definitely tell the band was in a different place. Slowed down for sure. Listen to the Live Trax from the first show of that tour and Dave sounds flat out bored.

    I heard the Vegas shows were going to be it for the band. They almost called it quits but went ahead and played, then cancelled the tour they were going to go on that spring over seas. The summer tour didn't start til August presumably because the band was working stuff out.

    Some people love the 07 sound, but I got sick of hearing a 7 min piano solo in the middle of Two Step, Jimi, #41, and then Eh Hee, Cornbread, YMDT, Louisiana Bayou. I didn't like the slowed down jazz jams featuring Butch or him copying every note Dave played on the guitar.

    08 saved it for me. I know Tim is getting flac now, but at the time it was amazing to have that energy back. And the band felt energized. Similar to this year.
