So what was likely happening here is that you had some debris in the groove, which blocked your stylus from advancing through the blockage. By pressing down on the tonearm, you likely applied enough force to break through the debris (which were likely fragments of the vinyl compound that weren't fully pressed or cleared by the stamper).
It's probably not a good idea to press down like that, as you may bend your stylus or alter the raking angle. In the future, if you encounter a locked-groove/repeating skip; identify where in the groove the blockage occurs, take the record off the platter, and use a toothpick to try to clear the groove.
