Re: The NBA Thread

2019-20 All-NBA teams:

First: LeBron James, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Luka Doncic, Anthony Davis, James Harden

Second: Damian Lillard, Kawhi Leonard, Nikola Jokic, Chris Paul, Pascal Siakam

Third: Ben Simmons, Jayson Tatum, Jimmy Butler, Rudy Gobert, Russell Westbrook

looks about right. holy hell Doncic what a year in perspective. Paul nice redemption story. this confirms Siakam had the most disappointing playoffs of the year.

not really much blame for Walker

Stevens, you wonder why they keep attacking Adebayo without first trying to get a switch onto Herro or Dragic. same thing happened last series. why attack Anunoby when the other team switches screens? doesnít make sense.

The Celts Miami game are scheduled for Thur and Sat and then not scheduled after that. Is that correct? That would only be Game 3 on Saturday.

Great coaches can barely get their teams to close out series and choke away second half leads repeatedly while their team becomes completely stagnant and goes away from their game plan? I mean you may be right, doesn't seem true in other sports but maybe basketball.

    Re: The NBA Thread

itís not really a choke if Miami throws out a defense you havenít seen all year. this game had one of the better zones iíve seen in the nba. not easy to find an answer in one half. and not Stevensí fault for ďswitching up the game planĒ, thereís really only one way to attack a zone

the team was poor at helping on the weak side pick and roll defense, thatís on the players not the coach.

i donít think you can blame him a ton here in game 2. maybe in game 1 when they kept attacking Adebayo without trying to get a switch

to fault him for not closing out the defending champs with best coach in the league quickly enough is just wrong tbh

heís not perfect but heís great. look who heís up against, itís not like heís blowing leads to the the Cleveland Browns

oversimplification but sure...he is definitely losing to a better coach, after beating another better coach the series before...the guy can be great and still lose, coaching at this level is hard tbh

I'm sure it is, he just consistently seems to not live up to the adjectives used to describe him by fans local and national. The Celtics were completely imploding in the locker room after the game fwiw.

part of that is Boston culture tbh. the national media has realistic expectations so they worship him. if he takes a normal town to three conference finals without ever having a top 10 player heíd be king. in Boston not so much

if they want to replace him theyíll have to wait til Spoelstra, Nurse, or Carlisle leave to find a better coach. thatís the list, 3 that are better than Stevens

locker room stuff is not good for sure but hey itís Marcus Smart, comes with the territory

I'm getting pretty tired of Brad. What on earth does he do during halftime to consistently come out so flat and predictably lose EVERY 3rd quarter for as far back as I can remember? Maybe we won 1 3rd quarter this playoffs. Yes the guys stunk tonight also, but at some point you need to question what the coach's gameplan is. Drawing an alley-oop play down 5 with seconds to go? Romeo Langford getting burn early in the 1st quarter?

    Re: The NBA Thread

Langford played for 1 minute and the team won by 2 points in that minute, it was a worthwhile gamble to see if he could add anything

7 seconds left down 5, a three pointer kills 4 seconds while an alleyoop kills 2. you’re drawing dead either way so i understand the thought process.

i would question leaving Kanter in a few minutes long which Spoelstra eventually sniffed out, but Kanter was still a net positive

not sure what’s going on at halftime but if he yelled

“turn the ball over 19 times less”
“don’t be three steps slow on transition D”
“don’t be two steps slow helping off the weak side”

it would still be completely out of his control

i’ve seen coaches lose games. Budenholzer lost 3 by himself in these playoffs. I’ve seen Popovich lose literally hundreds on his rotations alone. i would say Rivers is a huge culprit in LA’s demise with how disorganized they looked rotation and scheme wise.

not sure game 2 is even close to a blame-the-coach game. the offensive scheme in game 6 vs Toronto and game 1 vs Miami were questionable because they were iso-ing against elite defenders. in game 2 against the zone they were between a rock and a hard place- play iso you get low percentage shots, play standard zone offense you play right into Miami‘s hands.

i think we’re missing the forest from the trees:
    1) Nurse is the better coach and has better defensive players so yeah Stevens looked average by comparison
    2) Spoelstra is the better coach and has better defensive players so yeah Stevens looks average by comparison
    3) the Boston players have been a step slow on hustle plays (transition D and help defense) which makes Stevens look bad

if we ignore all context then yes Stevens sucks we can point to all his minor mistakes as confirmation bias

but hey if Boston lets him go they will be doing a lucky team out there a huuuuge favor

Seems like a lot of "well here are all of the reasons he isn't great and doesn't match up well against those who are but basketball is hard and he is great" not just from Justin but much more so from the Bradbots as the local fans have been called.

When the Red Sox had Francona and they kept coming back in playoff series and played better the more intense the spotlight got he was unquestionably great, BB is unquestionably great, it seems Stevens is generally good with a relatively young and undersized team. Justin is right in that you don't get a free pass to being called great in Boston, you don't get endless qualifiers to justify it, and you don't consistently blow leads.

    Re: The NBA Thread

i mean in a league where teams rarely punch above their weight and win, in 2018 the team got better with Irving injured and a roster of nobodies, came a win away from the finals

in a league where long series are death sentences for young teams, in 2020 the team beat the defending champions in a grueling series and never really backed down or had a bad game

Stevens doesn’t have Francona’s payroll or Tom Brady, perhaps if he had better players he’d be in a better position to get over the hump. Miami has three undrafted/2nd round players helping them this year, Boston has one in Theis and half in Wanamaker. Miami has two rookies in the rotation, Boston has half a player in Grant Williams. Miami has 2 midseason signings playing big minutes, Boston does not have one. Miami has a backup center that fits the team, Boston does not.

Stevens probably deserves some blame but Boston fans are failing to articulate good reasons why he’s not great. maybe he’s too calm, maybe he might make small minor adjustments too slowly. but the team blowing big leads? gotta give me more in the NBA the league of runs

It pains me to say it with how much I hate the Heat but this Heat team reminds me a lot of the 2011 Mavs. The big difference is that Jimmy Butler doesn’t HAVE to take over the game for them to win. He can and he has but it’s not required like it was for Dirk. They’ll be an interesting match against the Lakeshow.

    Re: The NBA Thread

I would say this team is spicier than Dallas was in that Adebayo is involved in so many actions while Chandler had a super low usage. The versatility pretty much all Miami frontcourt players bring is pretty awesome and not something anyone saw coming due to Leonard starting all year. if Nowitzki wasn’t playing well there was no inside out game and the only way to generate shots was for Terry and Barea to work off pick and rolls. thankfully that year Nowitzki only had an off night in game 1 of the finals but also games 4 and 6 which they won handily due to their defense on James

i guess that’s one key similarity, Chandler, Marion, and Stevenson really helped the weaker defensive players on that squad. Adebayo with Crowder and Butler your main blitz attackers at the top of the zone, genius

Boston figured it out eventually though, sending an extra man to the corner guy, we’ll see if they go zone second half again tomorrow

with the frontcourt versatility this team reminds me a lot of last year’s Toronto team more than anything.

Boston has no frontcourt and a terrible bench. I don't know that's it's surprising they're down.

Hayward is in the same Boston vein as 'Big Three era never lost a series at full strength' nonsense. Yeah cool you're the only team that's ever had injuries in the playoffs. Hayward's 13/4/3 that he'd be putting up is really what the team is missing
