Re: Random dmb thoughts that don't need their own thread

I love Carter's drumming at the end of this version of Spoon, no idea how hard it is to do or anything but it caught my attention

Spoon is so fucking good, doesn't matter which band era it's played in.

But I'll say this, we have too few Spoons with Roi released.

The real issue isn't about releases, it's about play counts.

Roi only played on the song 12 times: http://dmbalmanac.com/SongStats.aspx?sid=54&gid=94

Twice in 1998, and 10 times in 2003. And that's it.

I'd love for 11/21/98 to get release alongside a BTCS reissue. Spoon with Bela in the encore - yes please!

Check this one out if you liked N2's. This one was mind blowing:

Kills me how good that is and how much fun the band looks like they are having playing it and they will shelve it for another 5 years.

I agree that nothing can top CP Bonus Spoon (my favorite Roi solo of all time), but 11.21.98 would come close.

This is the #1 performance I want released by the band. #2 is Roi's last Two Step 6.27.08

Yeah, the ending on this one is really good. It is tighter than a lot of versions I have heard. They don’t go as crazy, but they hold it together really well.

Call me crazy but I actually prefer spoon with no Timmy solo. Really like it sax driven like it was the other night.

I think they need to bring back the Superstition cover from Fiddler's and Gorge last summer. Only played it twice but damn it was good. Would much rather have that over Sledgehammer or even over Can't Stop (yes, I would prefer a cover over this song).

Now that is a crazy stat. Good god how could this song have been so neglected. It's so weird how every tour only has its handful of rarities brought back, and they almost NEVER remain in the rotation into a next tour. Dreaming Tree was one that actually did have some good momentum from 07 through to 09- but that is a rare case.

Minarets from 2014 & onwards is like this. Pretty rare from the mid 90s until 2014, then it stuck around

One of my favorite moments ever at a DMB concert was when Spoon was liberated at Chula on 7.29.03.

Spoon is my No. 1 "chase song" right now. Couldn't believe they didn't play it SPAC 2017, after having it played 3 times that month and the Tuesday before at DTE. It was also scratched from the 2013 Bethel show.

And, thinking out loud, I probably went to the Gorge 1 year too early, because they'll end up getting it with Warren guesting or something like that.

^ my thoughts exactly. if it was clear they didnt like playing it, i wouldnt care if it got shelved. but since its clear they love jamming out to it, it upsets me how little its played

Why wouldn't the band release a B-sides album ASAP? They could do that, give the hardcores what they want, and then be essentially wiping the slate clean and could start from scratch after that.

I think it depends on what kind of b-sides album. If they have enough previously recorded material to pull together an album, or double album I don't see why not. They could easily put that together with a lot less effort than it would take to put together a new studio album. Maybe a few overdubs here and there, but get someone to comb through the vault and put something together a la Pearl Jam's 'Lost Dogs'.

However, if you're talking about getting the band into the studio to record an album of songs we've heard live and never released on a studio album, I can understand why they don't do it. They've clearly moved on from a lot of that material, and I get wanting to go into the studio to make new music. Especially when you're a band that tours a decent amount. When you have limited availability to get into a studio, it makes sense that when you do get into a studio you create something new.

Not really a question of "if" from what I can tell. Imagine if DMB dropped this album in 2020:

    Bismark
    Crazy Easy
    Loving Wings
    Early Home
    Drive Me Away
    Shotgun
Death on the High Seas [Interlude]
    Kill the King
    Break For It
    Sugar Will
    Break Free
    #40 [Hidden Track]

They have, to my knowledge, enough studio sessions with all of those songs to probably not have to record a note to get that album out.

And hard cores would love it, and I think there's a good deal there for casuals to love, and 2-3 singles.

It's a pipe dream, though, I think. Not going to happen while the band is still going and active.

#27 might be the single most underrated song by this band. If it had come out 10 years earlier than it did, it would be universally loved.

It's like that audio from one of the last times they did KKJ and clearly everyone in the band loved playing it and thought they killed it. Forget about the fans, why deny themselves that joy. I wish they'd stop playing the "hits" for a few years, and just play what they most love to play. If that thins out the crowds and has them move to smaller venues, then so be it. They're already having more fun onstage during the last two years than it seems they've had since Roi passed, so why not up the ante amongst the band?

Yeah, we love Big Whiskey, but the LRB disc, might be the best part of it. It's got edge and joy...dynamic as all hell.

I think it's less that they're past it and more that they're not interested. Think about what some of the "rock", pop/rock, pop, AOR, etc. hits have been in recent years.

If the band had promoted Idea of You and/or Do You Remember last summer or this summer (maybe one for each) using the modern techniques, I think those could have easily both been big hits. Acoustic tunes with island grooves have been near home runs for the better part of the last decade (or more) of summers. And while sounding NOTHING like them, IoY has an anthemic quality that helped make fun. and Imagine Dragons popular.

Again, they are both near perfect summer tunes that can speak to younger folks (like HS) as well as they're parents. That joyous reminiscence theme has wide appeal, even among that have barely been around long enough to really have much upon which to reflect.

I think Samurai Cop fits most of what you are describing just as well as those songs do, my perspective for a long time has been that DMB management just does an awful job in general marketing the band to casual fans.

I'm a student in a music school and one of my teachers who is a pretty successful local musician and has toured in support of some very well known bands can't stand DMB, which obviously is fine in itself but then you dig deeper and it goes straight to what I've kept running into for years. I asked him what it is about their music that he doesn't like and it's that all of their music sounds like generic soccer mom music and doesn't make someone who didn't get hooked earlier in their career interested in exploring more. He wasn't familiar with Bartender, Last Stop, Warehouse, IBYU, sort of familiar with Two Step and The Stone because he had students trying to learn them, but in general all he knew was WAYG, Mercy, You and Me etc. I've had this type of conversation over and over through the years, DMB is often looked at as a band with no energy and I think they've been around long enough to where they aren't going to change anybody's opinion regardless of what they do. I don't see them getting any significant percentage of casual fans more interested.

... long post but I respect your musical knowledge and think it's an interesting topic
