I ask this honestly - What was the last, great show?

In math, they might call it the apex, or the point of curvature.

The place where we had a zero slope.

It is the crease in your mind that every memory folds back into.

Where sadness turns the corner to nostalgia and you smile - deeply, silently. You realize your happiness is as much genetic as it is a choice.

We looked across the great space of our lives and realized that we had forgotten for a small time the destination because the journey was so - sweet.

6.8.97 gets my vote.

Remember, the future is no place to place your better days.

Let me be clear in how I speak about this time.

When I say the last, great show - what I mean is, things couldn't get any better.

In your mind, in your life, which show was that for you?

Was it a song? Or can you pinpoint it to one *note* out of an endless stream?

According to your explanation, DMB's concerts are like a parabolic curve and one show should be nominated as the vertex/highest point.

This doesn't work. Their concerts are like a sinusoidal curve, with many high points and some low points too.

The last moment of what I'd describe as the highest DMB bliss was the Seek Up / Grey Street / Shotgun run at the start of C'ville N2 '06.

For a whole show, while '97 is excellent, I'd have to go with this night (I mean, look at that set). Especially an opening #41 just as the sun is going down, one of those "no other place on earth" moments.

Not a bad argument. I was going to say 07/28/00. It was the first show I attended in 2000 and I haven't seen a show as good since (even though I have been to plenty).

While I respect the opinions of those putting shows in 1997 or earlier, I have a hard time imagining the apex happening before the release of BTCS, which has some of the Band's strongest material.

my main point was 2000 was the last amazing year. so the last show generally is the last great show. lets face it, there was not 1 low point of 2000.

You may be right. However, I took the OP to want in-person experience, though (has anyone really had a better on-tape experience than their best in-person experience?), and I had a long drought between '97 and '06.

after the seek up from 6/10/97 it was all downhill...

if not, if i had to pinpoint the "peak" of DMB, it would be 12/5/98...12/3 gets all the hype but the next night was musically, the best show ive ever heard them play...

I'm guessing the OP is referring to something comparable to what Big Cypress was for Phish, and IMO I don't think DMB has had a moment like that on stage. If you're really looking for a spot where there maybe a seismic shift in the DMB world, perhaps it would be the Lillywhite sessions.

The band was so near putting out another amazing album following the big 3, and then everything just kind of changed, and we've all seen what's come since then. Hit or miss albums, hit or miss tours, but still high hopes based on some gems we've heard and seen.

I personally believe that there are still great things ahead for DMB and I can't wait to be there for them.

    No argument here.

By the way, I am really suprised that no one has pulled out the 2008 SPAC N2 argument yet.

Let me be clear in how I speak about this time.

When I say the last, great show - what I mean is, things couldn't get any better.

In your mind, in your life, which show was that for you?

Was it a song? Or can you pinpoint it to one *note* out of an endless stream?
    yea, mannnnnnnnnnnnnn

look, I know that until the end of time people will hate things that other people love. What I dont understand is why people give something like a song the title of overrated. What if the song moves me more than any other song ever? I mean, it doesnt, but fuck... If it did, it would certainly not be overrated to me.

For the life of me I wont understand why people could like 27, but if they do and it moves them, great. Better than another chick getting pregnant in a Ram pickup listening to Nickelback
