Well if it's made illegal, and through a legal challenge the ban is upheld at SCOTUS, then it is not your constitutional right to own one and the government could be within their right to confiscate it. Now, of course that's unrealistic because A) there's never going to be a ban and B) the logistics of confiscating every last remaining banned item seems too tall of a task.
What I would suggest in the case of a ban is 1) incentivize people to turn their guns in 2) incentivize the manufacturer to replace he weapon with something within the new legal parameters and 3) put strict laws on the books to hold the owners and manufacturers liable if any crime is committed with the newly outlawed weapon types.
This is all far fetched and hypothetical though, because it's just not a possibility politically. Dems are big pussies on the gun issue and at most we'll see background checks and loopholes closed whenever they hold Congress/POTUS next. Even that may be too much to ask for.
