Agreed. I tend to find the positive in most DMB songs but, in my opinion, that song flat out sucks. Bottom of the barrel for me. I tried very hard to like this one, but it just never clicked with me, and unfortunately I caught it two shows in a row in 2015.

I object to your objective view. If you really want to be objective, then just because he has a few slides and isn't playing straight chords doesn't make the song any less generic a pop song than a Taylor Swift song. People tend to think that because Dave writes using unique chord structures and percussive, rhythmic playing that his music ceases to be pop music. That is just not the case. It's not all Pop, but he certainly writes Pop songs. (continued below)

So no Pop songs incorporate percussive guitar playing, or unique guitar playing and chord structures? The Beatles would like a word with you both. John Mayer is also known for writing complex rhythmic guitar riffs and licks, and I would argue that a majority of his catalog could be categorized under Pop music. Give "Neon" a try. What you said has no bearing on what makes a Pop song. If we're talking objectively, Pop music is defined as
popular music. Music that resonates with the masses and becomes popular on the radio. In this case I have to agree with YankeesDMB41 in that this song would absolutely fit within the realm of radio friendly music. It's upbeat, catchy and has very simple lyrics that allow the listener to catch on quickly. The guitar riff has nothing to do with that. The chord structure is pretty simple as well, as I believe it utilizes your standard A, C, G and D that you'll find in a lot of Pop songs.
