Re: Dave discusses writing new songs, wanting to record music w/ new DMB lineup soon
Wow, for my ears CT is leagues above ED and SU...can't fathom thinking it's anywhere near their worst album. I do get that some folks find themselves unable to adjust to the band sounding and being different, but that's got nothing to do with the quality of music on the album.
Production, however, is a funny thing for me. I really don't care about it, it's the songs. We've all heard and generally agree with the notion that you can't polish a turd, but I also find that you can't make a good song bad because of production and mix. I don't find the studio versions of any of the tracks from R2T on any later albums to be any "better" and certainly no more enjoyable. It's not that I can't hear the differences, it's just that they don't matter to me as they don't improve the music in anyway. My favorite version of BF, for instance, is actually from early in the 2016 tour with a great performance from...gasp!!!...Boyd of all people.
Some of tLWS session was clearly almost done, while other tunes are clearly still being refined and I think they all sound great. Same with the handful of stuff I like from tBS. The reality is that some of the best sounding versions of songs are live versions, be it from R2T or the latest Live Trax releases...not to mention tapes from shows that have yet to be officially released.
I remain a fan of CT and was pleasantly surprised with the new tunes that we'd not heard prior to their release or being played live on last year's summer tour. More recent stuff like DOtHS, VItR, Bismark, etc. have been great live and those there were recorded and released still sound great.
More is what I want, and as with the past I'll like what I like and disregard the rest...
