Sorry, forgot. On the jazz.. DMB has been jazzy since the 90s. Buddy didn't add any anything, especially jazz.

He’s fine when he plays piano. Organ is awful.

Need a violin though, so that’s what I voted.

Start this at the about the 15 minute mark and tell me how that isn’t jazzy piano playing.

On the bold, agree. Maybe Buddy was responsible for that... I'll give you credit here

Jazz doesn’t immediately coming to mind when hearing that. More like funk/soul. But if I can stretch and say it’s a form of jazz, but more funky and soul ‘jazz’ than anything else.

Butch Taylor’s style was played more like jazz or jazzy piano.

On another note, the idea of that intro was kind of cool, but the ‘feeling’ wasn’t there. Felt stale.

Buddy reminds me of someone who was probably inspired by Billy Preston. https://youtu.be/YlxxmNP2MKw

Preston played with ‘feeling’. He took control and didn’t give it back until he was ready. That’s something Carter and Jeff can do, but the others can’t.

I went to school for jazz guitar and performance. Buddy has definitely added a jazzy element back into the band.

I agree with Bmwm3oz that Buddy is probably more inspired by funk/soul elements then straight jazz, but he can still do both. All that being said, I'm still of the notion that he was a good add to the band. I'd love a violin back, but that looks less and less likely.

I'll add that the organ sound has a strong jazz pull for many folks...at least those that have not only heard it during ball games or associating it with the calliope. I grew up hearing it in Santana, the Band, the Allmans, Traffic (and other Winwood bands), Deep Purple, Yes, Booker T and the MGs, the Doors, and many others. As I got into studying jazz, various organ trios (from Jimmy Smith and McDuff through MMW and Soulive) just expanded my listening to the instrument. That instrument grooves and kills in the right hands and I'm really enjoying Buddy's contributions to the band.

I think Rashawn vouched too much for Buddy and there wasnt a really good effort to think of how to replace Boyd and this was the easiest route for the band to take
Thanks!... yep, agree with what you said... not sure about the Rashawn vouching for Buddy part... but it could have happened... That said, Dave has basically alluded to the fact he wanted Boyd to step away for a bit... and that he likes the sound without the violin right now... but, regardless of who was at fault, I strongly dislike the decision to not find a violin replacement.

Yeah if they would have stuck with Susan handling all the solos, it would have been a much better version for sure!

I don't hate the organ as much as many of you guys seem to. I'd say it adds more of a soulful groove to their sound rather than jazz. Buddy's taking us to church with his organ, not the ballpark!

There’s been a lot of organ in their albums post big 3 so I’m not surprised by the addition, and one year on I welcome the change. I watched a version of Pig last night from SPAC with an intro and it was amazing... and then Boyd started the song and he was all over the place. At this point, I’d prefer Buddy. I’d like to at least get a few shows this summer with a guest violinist. Also, I’d kill to hear Snow Outside. I want setlist changes more than I want a violinist at this point. Buddy could do some good stuff on the back catalogue if they’d just liberate it.

Buddy is a great musician and I love his energy, but I would rather him stick to the piano/keys and chuck the organ stuff. It just doesn't really fit IMO

Buddy very clearly has gospel roots in terms of musical style, not sure how no one has picked up on that. He also spent years playing in a more R&B or Pop setting. He absolutely adds a "jazzy" feel to certain songs when he uses the Nord. The Hammond fits perfectly on certain tunes, much better than the Nord would IMO. I very much enjoy what he has brought to the sound, there are a few tunes I'd rather him play the Nord than the Hammond, but he's the professional.

I don't hate the organ as an instrument. I hate the organ as a replacement for the violin in the Dave Matthews Band.

Jeff wants to bail? Let's add an Accordion. Tim is out? Let's get a Banjo. Carter says he is taking this tour off? Let's just hire a dude who does Beatbox.

Dave needs a night off? Karaoke machine and 15 of the railbirds.

I've loved everything Buddy has done as far as what type of sound he brings, expect turning LIOG into a carnival ride. He on piano/ep is money though. Not as good as Butch in that department, but show they missed that sound.

I could do without Buddy but I don't want Butch back at all. Still think the band needs a violin. But if they were going to get another violin player, surely they would've done it by now.

Buddy is good but the band needs the violin it just gives it that extra kick especially where the violin was such a staple in some songs.

I love Buddy, but I'm a huge Hammond fan so his addition is right up my alley. I wish the band would use him to throw out the tired old covers and add something new, maybe the Vanilla Fudge version of You Keep Me Hangin' On or Boston's Foreplay/Longtime. If they are looking for a clean break from the violin, stop playing the same damn covers you played with Boyd.

Was on the fence but after Des Moines, im sold.

He is the new BT, and im fine with that. He is filling in BT's solos (or what should have been BT's solos for the past X number of years). I love the violin effect he uses on the keys.....Everyday was hauntingly good, as was the stone, because of him! Even better than Boyd Era. Never thought id say that. At several points I closed my eyes in Des Moines and it sounded like old (Im still putting effort in) Boyd was up there jammin out.
