Yeah that's where I go wrong, my stride tends to get way too slow and long when I run slower, you should have high cadence at all times regardless

Both daughters slayed a 5k this week. Not necessarily a run, but I've got a 50 mile ruck race this weekend. No one has ever completed is solo, so figure may as well give it a rip. Daughters are signed up for another 5k on Tuesday and a 4 mile on Thursday. Not sure what sort of shape I'll be in, but I may have to trade my wife and run with our 5 year old daughter; think my 8 year old would run me into the ground at that point.

Dang, you are a warrior! As is the rest of the fam! So cool to see that your daughters are following in mom and dad's footsteps. Good luck this weekend and look forward to hearing your race report

Finished the 50 mile ruck race late last night. I have done some crazy runs, exciting stuff for work , and climbed some pretty good mountains, but this was probably the most insane thing I've ever done. The race is a memorial for a young co-worker that died, so it was a very spiritual experience being out there by myself going up and down the mountains for almost 18 hours. His parents wanted me to wear his memorial bracelet for the entire course since no one had ever completed the ruck race as an individual. It definitely served as an extra bit of motivation to put in a good effort for them and felt like he was on my shoulder the whole way helping me get up some of the hills. I managed to escape without Rhabdo or heat stroke, but have some gnarly blisters and my entire body is incredibly sore from walking through cramps for 10+ hours so I'll have to take the role of cheer leader for the girls' runs on Tuesday and Thursday.

That is remarkable and incredible! So cool that you were able to do it and the extra incentive gave me chills while reading it. I am sure you are pretty wrecked after that, so enjoy a few days off and cheer on your ladies this week.

It is softer than concrete, but is usually cambered for drainage. Dirt and grass are the softest, but can have an inconsistent surface. Tracks are good, but that's boring as hell. Unfortunately there isn't really a best/worst option just a lot of pros/cons. I try to stick to dirt personally.

Daughters both did really good tonight, both improved on their times from last week. It was my 8 year old's first time running a race solo since I was relegated to spectator status because of my feet. Her and a boy, probably near her age, got into a pretty epic battle the last 200 meters or so. They were both definately sprinting as hard as they could to try and win...came across the finish at the exact same time. Next up is a 4 miler on Thursday. Hopefully I am good to go by then...

Been trying to get back into running and have run over 15 miles between last Friday and Wednesday. I took yesterday off and think I'll be able to have my best run of the season today.

Nope. That's not at all how things were going to play out. At the 2.5 mark, you're going to pull your right calf, try to tough it out for another mile, and then walk the remaining mile home. Not really close to the best run of the season.

Felt good enough to get back out tonight and ran a 4 mile race with my 8 year old daughter. The course was ridiculously hilly, but she's definately embracing the "break your competitors' souls on the up" mentality. She did really good and our 5 year old daughter slayed it as well. No walking breaks apparently! Our oldest is off to soccer camp next week, so I'll probably run with the youngest next week so my wife can get a fast 5k in.

I have no idea how your kids can run that much, especially a five year old. That seems crazy to me.

Got back out there today but I'm still in a rut. Can't seem to break the 4 mile mark. I really want to get back to where I can run about 6 miles without having to worry about running out of gas. Maybe the heat has something to do with my stagnation. According to accuweather, it's 80 but feels like 94. Anyway, went 3.8 miles in just under 38 minutes. I'm okay with the pace for now, but again, would like to stretch these runs out a little more.

Add an easy 10 minute out and back after your run, can even take a break and rehydrate between the two, eventually you'll be able to bridge it and not need a break .. that's how I am slowly upping my long runs

I think the heat was a negative factor last week. This week I was able to run 4.8 miles on Monday and then 5.25 today.

Very hot here as well. 5 year old did really well in her 5k this week. Think we came in under 36:00. No walking breaks necessary!

Any tips for coming out of an 8 month slump? Used to be an regular runner for cardio. 5 miles a day 5 days a week, stopped last fall when I got super busy.

    I second this.

In the past year and half, I've ran a half-marathon (my first) and a ten-miler (my fourth), which was just this May. But I've ran so irregularly that now I'm trying to get back into it and I just feel sluggish to the point where I stop running after twenty minutes or so. I give myself a couple of minutes of rest while walking and then start up again, but I'm no where near what I'm used to. I don't know if it's physical or mental, or both.

nice, what race are you doing? there are so many great options for fall half marathons in new england

felt really good this morning, i did 17 at a modest 940 avg pace. felt like i could have kept going

need to get stricter at doing more tempo/speed workouts throughout the week

i just went through this phase as well. after my race in March, i got lazy. i did 4 mile runs a couple times throughout the week but i had trouble motivating myself to do more. it seemed really out of character for me. i wasn't injured or anything, just didn't have the mental energy.. even when i knew the chicago marathon training was approaching

but i had signed up for a running camp last winter that was in june, just a 4 day event. really got me back on track (lol). being around so many females that were passionate about running and all of the chit chat made me fall in love with it again. if signing up for a race won't motivate you, try joining a running club and go to one of the weekly runs/workouts

For anyone who is starting after a long hiatus, especially if you're a male and older, I'd recommend starting slowly. Pretty sure that the calf injury I mentioned a week or so ago is actually Achilles tendinitis.

    http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-c...s/con-20024518

    Quote:
Achilles tendinitis most commonly occurs in runners who have suddenly increased the intensity or duration of their runs. It's also common in middle-aged people who play sports, such as tennis or basketball, only on the weekends.

A number of factors may increase your risk of Achilles tendinitis, including:

Your sex. Achilles tendinitis occurs most commonly in men.
Age. Achilles tendinitis is more common as you age.

I'm going to be running the Ocean View half marathon in Ipswich, MA. There is a lot of false flat and then some crazy hills between miles 7-10 so I don't know how fast of a course it's going to be but I'll do my best. I've been doing a lot of ladder workouts on the track, 400 meter repeats, tempo runs, and "long runs" for now are only up to 8 miles. The race is in November so I'm getting there gradually but trying to work on my speed.

Great job on the 17, I also would advise the same that you wrote for those trying to get back into it!

but i had signed up for a running camp last winter that was in june, just a 4 day event. really got me back on track (lol). being around so many females that were passionate about running and all of the chit chat made me fall in love with it again. if signing up for a race won't motivate you, try joining a running club and go to one of the weekly runs/workouts
I joined a running group in 2015, and while it took a little while to get in the groove, it has really helped with my running. In 2016, I was able to get in with a smaller group of runners from the larger group, where we started to meet up outside of the workouts to run together. Then I trained with one of those guys over the winter since we had races a week apart in the spring.

Now, that same smaller group is about 6-8 strong, and some form of that group gets together every weekend to run and do brunch or coffee. It really changes the approach to a 15-18 mile run when you know you have a running buddy plus brunch/coffee as part of that plan.

I've been doing a lot of ladder workouts on the track, 400 meter repeats, tempo runs, and "long runs" for now are only up to 8 miles. The race is in November so I'm getting there gradually but trying to work on my speed.

Great job on the 17, I also would advise the same that you wrote for those trying to get back into it!
nice, sounds like it will be a pretty race

^I actually went for my first run in over a week and I didn't experience any pain, so I'm hoping whatever I inflamed/pulled/angered is no longer whatever it was.

When is Chicago...I'm assuming you mean the Chicago Marathon.
