There are a lot of new songs 2024

There are at least eight new Dave Matthews Band songs this year. There’s a good seven solid old songs that have been recorded… Let’s make this happen into an album. But we need a solid producer this time, unlike the last two albums with multiple producers.

What songs go on this album and which producer do we use?

There is enough material to make a new album yes. This band is utterly incompetent at bringing one to fruition so fat chance.

On the producer front though I would actually love to see Alagia at the helm for a full run. His tracks stand out as the best produced in the recent albums. Rob Evans did some absolutely amateurish sounding things on WATM so keep him away.

Okay. I need to hear this list of eight you're referring to.

How bout they start with someone new. Alagia, thank you for your contributions over the years, but I’m good with the generic rock riffs.

Get Thom Yorke in to inspire and help Dave finish some of his older work. Perfect outside the box thinker and may help lyrics wise too. Finish sugar will, finish black Jack sans gibberish, finish sweet up and down, finish crazy easy, finish (insert unfinished amazing dmb song)

Imagine thom Yorkes take on sugar will. Bleeps, clicks and synth bass.

    Or Peter Gabriel or
    Justin Vernon or David Byrne

They each get a song to produce!

Give me someone Dave respects and will push his limits with.i know he has another great album in him. Enough with the friends producing. And stop using friends guitars too. Nothing friends on this. So Stefan is allowed. Zing!

Wouldn't mind seeing what Dave Cobb could pull out of them. Would be a change of pace for certain. Would love to see the album centered around Shotgun, Bismark, Early Home, and whatever else.

Whoever the hypothetical producer to inspire the band and get the best out of them is I'd rather have the effort focused on music we haven't heard before

I would most like to see DMB release a single cover of 'Let's Dance,' ala Hewey Lewis.

It could even be a cover of Hewey's cover. I really like this idea.

    + 7 new/new to us songs.

Alagia/Lillywhite? Maybe Lanois would finally do one?

Keep Loving Wings, JTR, Shotgun, etc as live only songs.

That would imply the whole band would want to do this. I think CT and WATM are Dave Projects, with some obligation from the record label. He more or less saves the band the trouble, and just does as much as he can solo and/or pulls from older sessions.

I would love a true full band new album with real collaboration from all members. WATM certainly was newish music to us, but half of those songs were written before the sessions and some lean heavily towards Dave solo songs. Plus the isolated manner in which it was created didn't lend itself to be a true full band effort IMO.

But if that could be accomplished, a producer who would challenge and inspire them would be ideal. Not Rob Evans. Not John Alagia. Nothing against them, but they are friends with the band and not really able to tell Dave to do something better or that a song isn't good. They're gonna give the green light to everything.

i'd like to see what Rick Rubin could do with this band.

i think they would have to have a self mandate that they want to make something special like with BW, and / or sign up for recording an album with a set start and finish time, which they haven't done since AFTW.

if you think about it, its been 12 years since they really did the whole 'we're making an album' recording sessions. since then its been lets dabble here and there a few days and pick it up again in 6 months. in many ways i feel like working with lillywhite on AFTW was their last true studio album recording process / experience, which if i'm gonna armchair psycho-analyze means they consider themselves semiretired.

Not that I know Rick Rubin, but having watched his documentary and read some of his creativity book, I don't think he's the right guy for producing DMB record at their stage. DMB studio wise is a passion project. Someone needs to reignite their fire and rearrange their entire approach. And first and foremost, DMB must be willing to do this.

I think a new solo Dave Matthews record with Rick Rubin would be VERY interesting however. They could really explore some interesting ideas.
