Still haven't decided on Slipknot in a few weeks.
Yeah, I never know where to put Disturbed, but they are definitely kick ass. I saw them years ago with Mudvayne and Slipknot (actully we left before Slipknot came on). Mudvayne and Slipknot are a little 'too much' for me, but I love Disturbed and Sevendust. I'm not familiar with Dope and BLS. Have fun, I'm jealous!!

Disturbed is a great live band. Both times I've seen them they nail their songs live, which a lot of bands can't do. I love FFDP. Killswitch is great too. I saw Diecast at a festival show on 2007. They surprised me.

I love the energy and aggression at a Slipknot show. The pits really get going.

I have discussions all the time with my friends about what they consider metal. We hardly ever agree.

Edit: Oh yeah, Sevendust is my favorite modern metal band. I see them every time they come though the area

Oh I can imagine they do!! The pits that is. I could never be in a pit, I'd get squished!

Metal is hard to define, I've never been able to agree 100% with someone on what is or isn't metal. But that's half the fun.

True. I love to playfully argue about things like that. Take Black Sabbath for instance. They started heavy metal practically, but does their music sound like heavy metal today? Not really.

Do you mean does their older music sound like metal or does their newer music sound like metal?

I think the Dio-era Sabbath fits the "ideal" of metal more than the ozzy years.

    But that's just me...

I only rarely listen to metal, but my main band back in NY is a metal band. I find this funny.

Dope were one-hit wonders. I saw them open for Mushroomhead one year. Mudvayne put on an extremely boring show, at least when I last saw them. I saw BLS once, but Zakk Wylde seemed like an ass, so I was a little soured on them. Slipknot put on a great show when I saw them in 2000.

When I started expanding my musical horizons, Disturbed and Sevendust got left behind pretty quickly.

I met Lajon when I saw them at Tattoo the Earth 2000 & he signed my ticket. He's like 5' nothing.

I've left much of post 2000 metal behind. My tastes haven't changed a whole lot cause I still love the 80's and 90's shit but, man, I just need something viseral and original to perk my ears on someone new.

Hell the best metal I've heard post 2000 was ABI

Glad to see some DMB fans are also metalheads. I always feel like I lose my metal credibility by loving DMB and vice versa. Anyways, I'm really excited about the new Chimaira album, and I'm a huge fan of Devildriver, Pantera, Sabbath, J-Mann era Mushroomehead, Metallica (minus the Load/St. Anger years), and Machine Head. I listen to music in part for the emotion that bands put in their music, and few bands put the type of emotion into their music as metal bands do.

Mushroomhead was DEFINITELY better with J-Mann. I can't stand the new guy.

The band I listen to the most right now is Within Temptation. I appreciate bands that understand melody and song construction. I can only take the straight-ahead constant tempo bands (i.e. Hatebreed-types) so much.

The Black Symphony DVD is a stellar performance.

This is why I love you! I've said that too many a friend about metal and I get the "duh" look from them. Like melody and metal can't go together.

Those people are just clueless and always will be. If you like progressive metal with a full orchestra and choir performing live, check out that DVD.

We'll discuss it more when we go to Vegas.

I listen to music in part for the emotion that bands put in their music, and few bands put the type of emotion into their music as metal bands do.
Thats what DMB taught me. That carnal emotion can be produced in a manner that others around you can listen to as well.

I didn't have many metal friends and no one could ever "hear" my music.

However, I always had a hard time with bands whose lead singers did the whole "grumble, grumble, look at how scary my voice sounds", kinda thing.

Bands like slayer and cradle, I wish they would re-release everything w/o the vocals.

Slipknots 1st 2 were some of my last favs back when. I'm totally stoked on checking out Hudaks recomendation when I get the chance.

Speaking of melody: That is probably what also drew me to punk.

By the way, I should have multiquoted the whole Tool thing.

We'll discuss it more when we go to Vegas.

edit: I wish I could get into Tool, but I just never really liked them.

I've always been kind of an on-the-fence Within Temptation fan (was always more of a Tarja-era Nightwish fan), but DAMN does Sharon Den Adel have a fantastic voice. It's almost enough to make you weep at how beautiful it is. If you haven't checked out Epica yet, I highly recommend them as well (if you like the combination of operatic female vocals plus growling male death vocals, that is). Plus Simone Simons =
