Re: Podcasts

Also, a good final episode of To Live and Die. I am hoping there will be a follow up episode if there is an outcome to the one unresolved issue.

Okay I haven't done many true crime casts but I'm running low on new ones other than continuing to go back through old Reply Alls. So I'll start checking this one out this week.

Was pretty excited, after listening to Last Seen last year, to see them including a plot related to the Gardner museum paintings on the new season of Sneaky Pete

Finished to Live and Die in LA. What a freaking show. Maybe the best podcast I've listened to. S-Town was pretty close but this one had me going.

Ep 11 was fascinating. Insanely freaky that level of invasion is possible but insane that they could retrace things like that.

So, was recommended Sword and Scale. Was told not to start with Ep. 78. Of, course, started with Ep. 78. Barely made it through it. Said if that's as bad as it gets, I will try it from the start. Four more episodes involving children. Jesus...Fucking...Christ. Thankfully, it seems to have moved on a bit from there but fuck that was rough.

Casefile...I like the guy narrating but it is very dry, not enough reference material (like court recordings or interviews) and his recording equipment is terrible. Still going to give it a go and hope for the best but it got bumped for now.

Added Last Seen to the library for later.

If you like recordings/good story telling I would recommend “Cold”. It’s an investigative podcast like To Live and Die in LA/S-Town.

I love Casefile, personally. It’s usually my go-to podcast when going to bed, so I get the dry thing.

Thanks for the recc on Cold! I am a little familiar with this case as it started up here in Washington. As soon as I saw the names it was ringing bells. Haven't followed it in years so it will be interesting to hear developments and what happened from different perspectives other than what was on the news.

And I can see that with Casefile. My go to in those situations is Hardcore History. Fascinating subjects but Dan Carlin's voice is so soothing, I slip into nice dreams about Genghis Khan, wars, development of atomic weapons...

Half way through To Live and Die in LA based on the positive reviews here. Gotta say, not thrilled. I was digging the first few episodes, but I'm getting super annoyed with Neil. I just don't like his awkward way of questioning. Almost sounds like he's laughing when he's telling people "so sorry this happened" or whatever. And his relationship with the PI is odd to say the least. Neil is calling the shots in some cases, which doesn't feel believable to me.

Also, some of these phone interviews sound super fake to me. Chris' dad, Chase, Mary... I guess I'll finish the series after getting this far, though.

Those were the two I just listened to last night and this morning on my commute. I just wasn't buying any of it. The interviews felt so so fake.

Yeah, will stick it out. I do find the technology/tracking aspect as well as the storyline development of how the pieces fit together pretty fascinating.

Earlier in the series they were talking about just having a tracking out on the guy's plate. I couldn't tell if that was just like a BOLO type thing where cops are looking for the plate, or if he was saying they can tap into all kinds of surveillance to automatically find plates.

I think it's the latter. Tapping into resources like roadside/intersection/toll cameras that are constantly picking up plate information.

That's just one example of why I'm kinda meh on tracking type stuff. It seems like it's happening regardless of what you do, unless you really go fully off the grid. Phones and apps and Google and stuff just make my life too easy to try and limit my use of them because I think they're following me.

Good idea if you plan on killing someone.

I listen to so much wrongful conviction stuff that when I heard that ep, I was like, good, there's my alibi. I'm definitely keeping that shit on.

Imagine if we had that shit in Adnan's case...

I enjoy Revisionist History. It's a much smaller scale in duration and scope but it's always fascinating stuff. And it's Malcolm Gladwell so that's always a big plus.

Bought a ticket to see Maron do a club set in St. Louis in a few weeks. Pretty excited to see him. He's been a favorite personality of mine for several years now. Never done a real comedy show in a small club before. Pretty excited about that too.

Saw Maron Friday night. His new set was hilarious. He commented a few times about how much he liked the audience and even said at one point that he normally doesn't do sets that long. After the show he came out and did pics and shook hands. I got to talk to him briefly about Mavis Staples and Buddy Guy. Really cool and made my night.
