That is a problem with the movie that we're shown everything that we were
told about the character from the original movies. I guess the things we didn't know where:
Had a love interest
Was a soldier for the Empire
Which isn't a whole lot. But unless you want to pull a Rogue One and have Han team up with a bunch of nobodies I'm sure people would have gone "but where's Chewie? Where's the Falcon?"
Maybe you have a movie about Han Solo that is just him and Chewie doing jobs and escaping danger that isn't an origin story?

Indeed. He still has wits and the know-how to get himself out of situations. He's more doe-eyed and in love and not as hardened of a character as he is in Episode IV or V. Which I guess is a good thing as he becomes that way either due to the events of Solo or the period between movies.
