Re: Podcasts

Dissect.

By far my favorite podcast right now. If you like musical analysis you'll love it. In season 1, host Cole Cusina dissects Kendrick Lamar's "To Pimp a Butterfly" and season 2 is Kanye's "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy." He spends an entire episode – usually 30 to 45 minutes – on each song. Season 1 is somewhere between 12 / 14 hours, so it's extremely in depth. Even if you're not a fan of Lamar or Kanye (which I wasn't before listening) you'll at the very least be able to appreciate those albums after listening. Very highly recommended if you're looking for a podcast to really sink your teeth into.

What are your favorite Reply All episodes?

I loved the first few I listened to (Long Distance part 1 &2, Phantom Caller) after I got suggestions on here - but the past few I've listened to have been just OK for me.

I'm traveling this week and looking for a couple good ones to kill some time. Suggestions from all are welcome.

May give Dirty John a try instead.

    #18 - Silence and Respect
    #37 - Taking Power
    #45 - The Rainbow Pug
    #53 - In the Desert
    #68 - Vampire Rules
    #76 - Lost in a Cab
    #91 - The Russian Passenger
#93 - Beware All (Part II of #91.)
#97 - What Kind of Idiot Gets Phished?
    #99 - Black Hole, NJ

Those are ones where it's more of a story/investigation. I avoided ones that were topical issues or spent too much time on Yes Yes No (I love this segment, but can see why others would be bored by it.) I'm sure I'm missing some good ones but some of the descriptions on their feed are vague and didn't trigger my memory as to what exactly the story was. Those are ones I remember and like.

Thanks! The only one I've listened to on this list was "In the Desert" and that is in my top 5.

Totally agree about Reply All – after Dissect my favorite podcast. Episode 50 "The Cathedral" is my favorite, but be forewarned it is a heavy emotional episode. The 4 part "On the Inside" episodes (#64 to 67) are also fantastic but, again, are pretty heavy. For lighter episodes, finds one that feature Yes Yes No. YYN is so good ... almost wish they would do a spinoff of just YYN in addition to RA.

Glad I'm not the only one who noticed that and wanted to throw my phone out the window.

yep- but the ending pulls it all together- she doesnt talk much in the middle episodes. but her role at the end is superb.

Anyone listen to Homecoming? If not I def recommend, It's a Gimlet podcast and it is fantastic writing. Psychological thriller with Oscar Isaac, Catherine Keener, David Schwimmer. Really good. Now it appears that the creator of Mr. Robot, Sam Esmail is involved with creating a TV series for Amazon based on the story. So far Julia Roberts and Bobby Cannavale are on board.

    I just can't get into fiction/scripted podcasts.

I need to though, because I'm desperate for more content. 8-10 hours a day in the car is making me go through content way faster than it's coming out/I can find new stuff that I like.

I was getting overwhelmed by the amount of pods I was subscribed to and keeping up, but then I switched to an app where I can listen to them at 3x speed and now I'm too far ahead. I could use more content, but also like to split my day between podcasts and listening to music. Usually crank through most of my feed before lunch then listen to music all afternoon.

I had to come back to this post, because after reading it I tried to listen to a podcast at 3x speed, and it was incomprehensible to me at that speed.

You have to work up to it, for sure, kind of like speed reading. Can't just jump right in. And there are some people on podcasts that speak quickly naturally, so I have to dial it back for them to be comprehended. But, listening to any of them at normal speed now sounds like slow motion.

I use the Overcast app which allows me to dial it between 1x - 3x. I'm usually somewhere between 2x and 3x depending on the pod. It allows me to save the speed for each pod individually too which is helpful.

It's definitely not for everybody and takes some getting used to, but it really helps tear though more content once you become accustomed to it.

I'm on Episode 39 of Criminal. Excellent podcast, about 20 minutes for each episode, really like the narrator. They delve into these interesting/strange stories. The podcast has a nice format too. Check it out if you haven't.

Recently started listening to it, I like the narrator as well. Like you said, they focus on strange or odd stuff mostly it seems. To name it "Criminal" is a little misleading imo cause it doesn't really focus on crime per se, but I'm enjoying it none the less.

Been crushing Dan Carlin's Blueprint for Armageddon WWI podcast lately. So good. When you listen to his descriptions of what was happening, you almost feel like you're experiencing it yourself. I feel like I was failed by the public education system in my history education. what a waste of time. I wish my history teachers and the curriculum had been better/more interesting. Don't make me remember specific events and dates in a vacuum, paint me a picture of what's happening!!

Just listened to first 25 minutes or so. They just started speaking about R.E.M. at about the 20 minute mark, which is actually pretty good for them.

Reply All can be fucking great. #111 is pretty riveting so far. I'm slowly working my way backward in between releases of West Wing Weekly and Pod Save America/Pod Save The World.

TWWW's Big Block Of Cheese Day #2 this week had me laughing out loud in traffic yesterday, but ultimately it was unsatisfying.
