When did the fan base find out there were abandoned sessions with Lillywhite?

It amazes me how similar this all sounds to The Beach Boys, Pet Sounds/Smile issue. It's the complications pairing business and art.

Also, perhaps Dave is beholden to the company because this band is primarily a live band and they need a lot of money upfront to continue touring every summer that only a company would have on hand? I don't know how that works.

Re: Podcast: The Lillywhite Sessions, with Steve Lillywhite (Part 2) - Records & Riff

Old School fan here just chiming in with a few things after listening to the interview...

It was not mentioned on the episode , but the original plan of Dave/Glen Ballard was for Glen to bring a new energy to what we now know as the Lillywhite Sessions. As luck/chance would have it, just so happened they meshed very well together and wrote 14 songs (12 on Everyday, You Never Know, and one more unknown). The plan at first was not originally to scrap the songs, but rather the producer (steve)

But something else I wanted to mention,
There has been some HEAVY flip flopping on the bands opinions in the DMB (Roi era).
Lillywhite hinted as early as 96 of dave feeling like maybe doing it on his own would be better, and going on record in 09 talking about the 06 breakup that was never reported..

    Also,
Specifically going on record during the Everyday PR tour as slamming the Lillywhite Sessions vibe and Dave even went so far as to say this album saved both the band and his life. (everyday)... Stefan and Carter both praised the new method of flying to LA and laying down already written tracks, Boyd praised the new sound Ballard had on the violin and then during the BUSTED STUFF press tour, they say how Everyday sucked, it didnt work and breathing new life into these songs from the Lillywhite Sessions at a later date was wonderous.
Then for the Stand Up press tour it was all about the cancerous time in the studio and how they finally returned to Batson, this amazing producer that had them writing as Carter put it, "songs you can play in a club" (lol)...
Then for the Big Whiskey tour, it was about how the previous albums were DMB with Ballard, or DMB with Batson etc... and now it was return to form..

Bottom Line is this... theres alot of turmoil that clearly went on all these years. the stories to come out of this world once those who choose to betray Dave might be glorious.
In fact, if I was Matt Norlander, I would call Boyd and try and get him on for a multi-part series, Glen Ballard the same.. Butch Taylor of course... Just so many names with so many stories that once they choose to tell, it will likely get dark very quickly.

    Just my opinion...

Also wanted to add that this interview and subsuquent re-listen confirms my unpopular opinion that Lillywhite Sessions are mostly garbage tracks. Good skeletons of songs and sure some evolved live to be great when performed at their best, but the album just is bland, uninspired and all these years I defended Everyday, which IMO has aged beautifully (again unpopular opinion, but see: so right, fool to think, if i had it all, what you are, sleep to dream her,) and Lillywhite Sessions imo are just completely overhyped.

I never liked Busted Stuff, because as a fan, in 2002, it was exactly that, just "Busted Songs" weve heard for years and there was little excitement getting another version of them, but after listening to both in the last 24 hours, I think BUSTED STUFF really SOUNDS much much better

I believe he will be back on stage tomorrow night for the first time playing DMB songs, although not with DMB.

    Same.
I also went to the “album” after the interview and my immediate thought were: this was unfinished and mixed in a hurry before vacation, and still sounds great! So actual and beautiful after all these years! In the big 4 for sure.

Yep. Maybe some of the songs with rough lyrics, but I’d still take most of the tracks over what was done on Busted Stuff.

Big Eyed Fish from tLWS is light years better than the Busted Stuff version, and I like the lyrical outing Dave added to it.

I think "garbage tracks" is kinda harsh. They're unfinished studio sessions, and it's not entirely fair to compare it to a finished product. And, that is at least partly why the band would be pissed that it all leaked.

Busted Stuff is a finished product, so yeah, it probably "sounds" better (I haven't listened to it or done any kind of comparison in a long time.) I'm with Norlander, though, that JTR, and the outro in particular, is near the top of the list of things they've laid down in the studio.

I do feel a bit justified in my love of Monkey Man, though, after Steve's comments about it, and I'm kinda bummed that whatever it evolved to after that recording never made it to a live setting, and that we'll never get a finished studio cut of it. But I do like the unfinished track as-is.

*Sigh.* When Charlie Rose asked Dave why couldn't he have just finished tLWS AND release Everyday simultaneously, Dave said he would have loved to have done that. Everyone would have been happy about that. Those that left would have had their album and Everyday as a coaster, those who became fans of DMB during that time would have had Everyday still. We wouldn't have had Where Are You Going or You Never Know but that exchange would have been worth it.

In Norlander's latest podcast with Steve Harris re: Busted Stuff, he mentions that he is scheduled to interview Carter again this summer for the Modern Drummer piece. So it seems things are moving forward with the article, potentially tied to the album release.

This. That big eyed fish is the reason tLWS upsets me.

It’s strange that Steven Harris and Dave are good friends, their last work on Some Devil is seen as a success, and that they’ve never worked together since. I don’t love all of the decisions they made on Busted Stuff, but would much rather they work with him again than Batson or another producer that doesn’t fit their sound.

Reading those back and forth tweets with Stefan and Lillywhite someone posted- and listening to this podcast, you definitely get a sense of how lillywhite mightve talked himself out of the job himself- as Stefan hints at.

I mean I can see lillywhites gripe with the band not crediting him on the busted stuff album

But other things he says made me roll my eyes a bit, and im just an outside observer. Like him talking about being a father figure to Dave back in 1996 because "he lost his father at a young age." Seems like him puffing his chest quite a bit that he helped keep the band together, despite Dave second guessing it- something tells me Dave would have a highly different recollection of how that went down than Steve did.

Was there ever a confirmed reason why Butch Taylor got the boot? His era of DMB live is my favorite

From what I heard, and I'm not sure if this is what actually happened or not, he was a bit too friendly with some of the groupies of the band, which turned into a whole situation. If this is indeed true, I can see that being an enormous distraction and pain in the ass.

ive been called out as being 100% wrong, convincingly as well
so this is my guess that has been likely proven wrong but i say 100% money related
    people say otherwise,
    but playing
Money (pink floyd) > Money (thats what i want)
in the first show without Butch, which was announced only the day before was telling imo
