Re: Songs DMB Should Cover

One I hadn't thought about before (and would never happen) is Pink Floyd's Dogs.

I was listening to Animals on the way into work this morning, and realized how perfect Dogs would fit DMB's sound. Dave would sound great on the guitar riff with the acoustic, and it would really fit his voice. There's a number of guitar solos in it that would be perfect for Tim, and one of them (the second one) would sound great if it was changed into the horns doing it instead of the electric guitar. They could cut down the time on it considerably (song is like 18 minutes long), but it was a really great jam to it that, I think, fits DMB and especially DMB 3.0's style perfectly.

I think they should do Joy Division's "Love Will Tell Us Apart"

This is the version that makes me realize what you can do to the tune:

    Here's the original:

They could do an amalgam of the two given their instrumentation. But I'm hearing Dave kill this in my head.

I think covering this would be funny, because I loved it on first listen...actually after the first line or two. It sounded so much like Dave, but obviously not him:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bA-315IeTao

Yeah, it's Mumford and Sons, but I'm a huge fan and fuck me if it isn't just a killer song.

DMB doing JD would be just so... weird lol. I love JD and New Order, but it just doesn't seem like a good fit for DMB. Maybe like 92-93 DMB, but now it'd be weird as hell haha

I think they should do some Van Morrison, and some more Peter Gabriel

Edit: Specifically by Van Morrison, I think DMB would do justice to "The Way Young Lovers Do" off the Astral Weeks album

Gabriel era Genesis would be awesome too. As for Van, anything BUT "Brown-Eyed Girl".

Not sure if you like Phish at all (I swear I'm not a Phan-boy, but they are good). They did a rendition of "Watcher of the Skies" and despite a lot of criticism (I think mostly from the Genesis fans) I think they pulled it off really well. Trey was so genuine, as he is a huge Genesis fan himself.

Since Dave often throws in random covers as solo songs, I think him doing "Hurt" would be incredible. The NIN version is significantly better than Johnny Cash's version imo, but either "style" would be an awesome E1.

I would have thought so until I heard the version in that first clip as my wife and I were watching The Girl from the Song on Netflix a couple of months ago. It reminds me of Buckley's version of Hallelujah...it turns Cohen's version on its head. On a certain level it's barely the same song.

So, I don't think anything is off limits, but there's a bunch of crappy tunes I wouldn't want to hear them do, but then there's this:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CWQo0bktuAI

Terrible song made great by master musicians having a lot of fun. DMB clearly has this capability.

Not a Phish fan. Amazing musicians and I'd probably like them if they were an instrumental band. The problem is that they sing and I do not like their voices. This is not to say they are bad singers, it's just I do not care for the timbre of their voices. They have a sameness about them and lack real distinction, expression, or passion as vocalists to my ears.

That said, I love the tune Farmhouse and a handful of others, but they aren't my bag. I'm into Widespread Panic, moe., and other "better" vocal bands from the jam band scene.

Here are better versions of Nickel Creek doing Toxic:

Cash's version is the version for my ears. Never liked NIN, mainly as I don't like Trent's voice. If your music has vocals I have to like the singer or I'm out. But more to the point, Cash adds a dynamic and poignant quality to the song that improves it exponentially compared to NIN's johnny one of extreme aggression through most of the their stuff...especially the early stuff.

Just my $0.02 and obviously nothing more.

I've been on a Traffic kick this summer. How has this band not covered something of their's? Surprised it hasn't happen with DM inducting them into the Rock Hall.

But specifically DMB 4.0 would knock Feeling Alright, Light Up or Don't Be Sad out of the park

Sorry, but I have to disagree on this. Trent/NIN did some awesome work and Hurt was always my favorite from him. I like what Cash was doing with the cover, but I still prefer Trent's versions.

I’m sure someone has said it in here but I’ve been on a “Joyful Girl” kick lately. This version of the band would make it sound incredible.

I don't think there's a Simon song I'd be unhappy about them covering. Give em all a shot. Kinda hope when Paul really really hangs it up that Dave could be a torch bearer for a lot of his songs.

That Diamonds on the Soles from a couple years back when Dave filled in for PS was solid. And with very little rehearsal time, if I remember correctly

Hahaha MMMBop would be a ridiculous cover. Down w Love Shack. Would love to see 10th Avenue freeze out.

...later this decade. Hopefully no more covers for a long time (except for Call Me AL as that would slap, or the return of LBV)

Always thought they would do a killer job with You Don't Know How It Feels by Tom Petty. Horns could do the harmonica line in the song. Short and a true sing-along number.

Yeesss - I also thought this or "Girlfriend is Better" (Stop Making Sense) would absolutely rip. Def top 2 TH for me.

Dave seems to love David Byrne, so one can hope?

I dunno man, if they were going to go the David Byrne route I would hope for (Nothing But) Flowers or You & Eye. Good shit regardless.
