I love all these answers... but I see it this way.

Dave, Stefan, Tim, Carter, Rashawn all attend TWBFBTFOTDMB (the way back featuring boyd tinsley formerly of the dave matthews band)

Only to realize that they want to join the band themselves as their time has run the course. To form a superior band....

Have you heard any of Jeff's other works? He is phenomenal and can play pretty much anything. He only shows a small fraction of his range with DMB

Within a year of continuing to tour, Dave and Carter (w/ current band plus new bassist) realize that while they can still have fun on stage, playing to a large and eager audience- this band is over. The spirit of whatever it was is gone. And performing songs for the thousandth time, while the contingent of dissatisfied fans turns from a vocal minority into more of a consensus for a meaningful portion of the fanbase (who is walking away from a concert these days and feeling like they've gotta go see another one?), the mojo is lost. With the writing on the wall, and the band is not wiling to ride out to their curtain call with larger percentage decreases in ticket sales year over year- they stop. And, importantly, no one internally believes they can record and release a studio record that puts them back near the status they once were.
