I do it both ways since I learned about doing it the monkey way, though I think both ways are pretty much the same.

Also, I find it weird that i think I've never seen bananas on a tree until now. As a result, I can see why one would refer to the nub end as the top. However bananas only sit one way in the grocery store, your counter, and are always depicted as stem-up. So that's the top as far as I'm concerned. This is the more important issue in this thread, imo.
