I bought the vinyl and the box set. Listen to the box set, kept the vinyl sealed.
According to the promoter, the first batch of vinyls were labeled incorrectly. Side a sticker on b and vice versa.
So who knows 15 years from now, it could be worth something. Either way its a fantastic piece of work, I still listen to it 4-5 times a week.

That's a shame you kept the vinyl sealed, it's the best sounding version of Big Whiskey we have. On Why I Am the CD has barely 5dB of dynamic range, the vinyl has almost 12dB. The vinyl isn't a victim of the loudness war as painfully as the CD is.

There's probably 5,000 mislabelled vinyl records of Big Whiskey, it's highly unlikely it will ever be worth a lot of money. (It's side's b and c that are backwards)

I've tried that, they just keep sending you out mislabelled ones. Without asking for the old ones back. Maybe now it's different.

The other problem is that off-centring of side C or D that is in all the pressings.

There's a 16-bit/44.1kHz vinyl rip on Demonoid using a VPI Scout - highly recommend finding that one. There's a 24/48 on there too but the equipment wasn't as good and neither were the ripping levels resulting in clipping and less dynamic range.

I guess if you had shit stereo systems all around and wouldn't notice the difference?

There's a big reason to own this album on vinyl, it's sonically superior to the CD. Perhaps pictures will explain it better:

Here is a look at "Why I Am" ripped bit-for-bit from the CD:

    http://img402.imageshack.us/img402/4...mparison50.png

Clipping is hidden in this picture so you can see the waveform better. The top half represents the top 10 decibels of dynamic range, there should only be peaks in here yet this has peaks nowhere to be seen, almost the entire song floats along with 1~2dB of dynamic range tops. The bottom half shows the waveform, look how flat it is all squeezed into the top, no life.

Here is a look at "Why I Am" ripped from vinyl to PCM on a high-end turntable system:

    http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/139...mparison50.png

Ahh! That's better. In the top half you can see the top 10dB reserved for peaks of the music, that's what gives the music its dynamic, its life. In the bottom half you can see the waveform isn't flat, but rather is spikey...which means the music has life.

So, there is VERY good reason to own this album on vinyl.

    Re: No more BWATGGK vinyl?

Yeah, this whole keeping vinyl sealed is really weird to me. It's never going to be a collector's item, because it's not a limited print. Does this come from what people see the BTCS vinyl going for? Because otherwise, I can't really see it. In the same way that albums from the 70s have depreciated into dollar-bin fodder, we're entering a period of vinyl where you can see how the same thing will happen. I'd be shocked if you can't get BTCS for 5 dollars in a decade or so, because of how many were pressed and are in circulation.

What will be interesting to see is the quality of the records when they start popping up in used bins. A lot of people have bought their first turntables in the past few years, so it'll be interesting to see how well the albums were kept/how degraded the grooves are from the tracking force not being set up correctly.

All of my new LP's will always be in mint condition because I look after them and keep them in good outer sleeves as well (www.sleevetown.com) so I'll always be able to list both the jacket and vinyl in near mint condition should I even choose to sell.

IMO MINT is only for unplayed.

GOOD NEWS! I just got another copy of BWGK from Amazon.com and it plays dead centre on SIDE D and has no labelling issues.
    Beauty!

The matrices are the same (catalogue # from the barcode along with SA [Side A], etc.) except the new pressing has RE-3 after the catalogue # and does NOT have the STERLING stamp on it or the RJ (Ray Janos) initials.

Anyway, I'm very happy to have a perfect copy of this now.

For those of you still looking for BW in vinyl, Best Buy has them in stock in their store. I was at Findlay, Ohio Best Buy yesterday and they had four in stock for $14.99.

If you can't find it at your local Best Buy, contact the Findlay, Ohio Best Buy. They'll ship it to you (for an extra shipping fee, of course).

    Re: No more BWATGGK vinyl?

My only gripe about vinyl these days are the prices. It seems to be so inconsistent. I love that I can get loads of Jean Luc-Ponty and Genesis for between $1-3. But in the same breathe cringe when they sell Rubber Soul for $75. I know it's all supply and demand and what with having the Beatles name on it makes it more expensive, but still... Lots of great jazz albums are this way too.

I guess I shouldn't complain... for every $40 I spend on a Coltrane album, I'm getting James Taylor for $2.
