Re: Buying a new Car

Check out truecar.com to get an idea of what cars are going for locally. The lowest price the car is sold at on True Car is your starting point for negotiating.

That site is a bit of a trap because anytime a car deal agrees with an offer means you can still have gotten them lower, but it has some good information on it you can use to your advantage.

One last thing I just saw. Don't tell the dealer the monthly price you're aiming for. Just negotiate on the total price.

If you are going to trade, go in with kbb and nada printouts. They will try to tell you "blackbook" is industry standard, but that's just a load of shit. blackbook is just a pricing guide dearlerships use to screw customers.

Also, check out carmax and see what they will give you for your car. usually give a pretty competitve price and then you don't have to deal with hassle of selling to private party

    Really?

I've tried Carmax twice now, and they were extra rapey both times. Tried to sell my brother-in-law's 2005 Civic SI to them. They offered $800. Ended up selling it for $7k. Tried to sell my wife's 1998 Civic to them, and they offered $450. Ended up selling it for $3k.

interesting. first bad things I've heard about Carmax, though I only know a couple people that have used them.

    One of the best tips.

If you tell them what you want to pay per month and you're not smart about it, they'll suck you into a long-term loan, which is never good.

Correct. I went back and forth on doing the 48/60 month loan. Ended up going with the 60 month one so that I'm required to pay less per month, but I'm going to try to pay extra every month and get it paid off in closer to 48.

Make sure whatever loan you end up getting has no penalty for early payment.

Yeah, that's right. Floor mats, keys...

    Keys!?

    How ya gonna start it?

Always make sure those fucks fill it up too. They say that they're "not supposed to" anymore, but there's no way I'm driving off the lot with anything less than half a tank.

    Re: Buying a new Car

This was the closest existing thread I could find to my question. Not about which car to get, my mom already leased a new car a week ago, but there's something that really stunned me and I'd love to see if anyone else has ever heard of this. It's a Kia Rio, we open up the trunk a couple days ago, and see the giant hole cut out of the floor for where the spare tire goes (including a new jack) -- only NO TIRE. She called back the dealership today, they told her they don't include the actual spare tire, because they're afraid the amount of mileage you can get out of your gas will be too adversely affected by the weight of the tire dragging the car down. But of course, they're happy to sell her a tire separately, though we never did get a return call yet on what the price is.

This is a brand new car. Has anybody EVER heard of this happening?? I sure as hell haven't.

JR, I'd call other dealerships to see if this is common. Bullshit they didnt disclose this. If other dealers include the tire, I'd keep nagging them until they gave it to you or sold it heavily discounted.

Most new cars no longer come with the actual tire (rather it's a kit that helps you fix a flat or plug a hole), so that you can improve the gas mileage. I've never heard of a new car having the new tire cut out of the trunk.

I have never heard of that. Then again, it's a Kia, anything is possible.

wow, seriously? That still seems utterly ridiculous to me. We're talking about one friggin tire, and (generally) not even a full sized one, if it's just a donut. I mean is the same argument used if you've got 3 people in the car instead of 2, that you won't get as good gas mileage?

You can bet your ass they don't have 3 people in the car when they are doing the EPA testing and putting the mileage on the window sticker.

They're all expensive. They're all high quality. It'll probably come down to interior and exterior appeal.

I'd start by commiting to spending a Saturday test driving (but NOT buying) one of each.

yeah... i used to be a Chevy guy but i've been driving a lot of Fords for work.

i drove the new Ford Explorer for about five months last year (rental), and really liked it. but it's expensive too... and i think a truck bed might be more usefull than an SUV.

and supposedly the new Dodges have the best engines/mileage, and i like their interior. but they're god awful ugly on the outside...

i typically hold onto a vehicle for a while. i've been driving for nearly 20 years and only had two trucks. the current one is a 2000 model.

    Re: Buying a new Car

my landlords just got a brand spankin new chevy avalanche crew cab last week. one of their biggest deciding factors was leg room in the back. the avalanche had it and others didn't. its a really nice truck and they got a shit ton of stuff in it. so its really nice, but its very expensive. /mr dink

from what my landlords told me about their search, all the trucks were pretty similar, so there were only a few things that set one apart from the other. so think about if there is anything specific that is needed, like extra leg room, and find what ones have what you needs and what ones don't. then out of whats left, just pick think looks and feels the best.
