Re: DMB Is Finallst for R&R HOF
Fela
Rage
Eminem
Dolly
Tribe
Kate
I don't spend much time listening to most of these folks and've never really listened to Eminem, but they're all hugely significant and influential in the world of music.
- Fela is generally considered to be one of (if not the) top artists at the center of world music. His influence directly on folks like Peter Gabriel and Dave, as well as indirectly on the likes of Paul Simon, is massive. He also used his music to push back against his government and speak to those issues that would help his nation. He should be a lock, but the voters are myopic.
- Kate's popularity never quite reached the heights needed to be a lock, but she's a seminal female artist that should also be in.
- Dolly is in, this process of including her among the nominees is pretty much performative.
- Tribe is just so good on so many levels compared to so many of their peers. They should be a lock, but we'll see how it plays out.
- Rage should get in too. I'm not much of a fan of their music, but their influence, voice, and popularity are all more than enough for them to be in.
- Eminem also seems like a formality to me. His music/existence has no relevance to me, but anyone that isn't aware if his impact is too old, too young, or with blinders to hip hop...none of which is a big deal.
Shit forgot Devo...I thought they were already in...
Though not my cuppa, I think Beck and Lionel Richie are also likely inductees with Dolly and Em.
Avoiding DMB is a bullshit move, but this really just a popularity contest. They could have specific parameters to meet ensuring entry, all of which DMB will have met, but it's about letting the fans and HoF voters feel like they're choosing who gets to be a part of the club.
