That's the kind of thing I'm talking about, that's a good use of wedding budget.

We decided the same thing. We wanted a band so we're trying to cut back on some other things. Our centerpieces are just wine bottles with candles in them, we got our wedding venue cheap, and stuff like that.

I've seen some really cool hanging lighting fixtures with mason jars that were sweet. Honestly the only thing of that type I remember.

A band would be cool if wedding bands didn't suck so hard. I've never, ever, seen a good one. DJs are so much better.

my fiancee and i wanted to get a local band called felix brown to play ours. we'd seen them play at bars and small venues all around our neck of the woods while we were in college, and they KILLED it every time. they're a rock/funk type band. we know a few acquaintances who had them at their wedding and they got rave reviews.

then we looked at how much it cost to book them for a wedding...$5500 to START. then travel expenses (we're getting married in northern NH, they're a boston-area band) were an additional $500, and then they wanted 3 rooms for the night, and the hotel the reception at aint cheap, so we were looking at over $6500 for the band. no thanks. we know several people from our college days who became professional event DJ's and they get great reviews, so we're going with one of them

And I think you just nailed why most wedding bands suck. The good ones are stupid expensive, so people book the cheaper ones, which suck.

It's easy to score a good DJ on the cheap, mostly because it doesn't take much to be a good DJ and there are a million of them in any big city looking for work.

The one I used was a buddy from work who DJ'd at clubs as a side gig and was looking to get into weddings. He charged me like $200 with the caveat that I'd write reviews for him for future clients if I thought he did a good job (which he most certainly did.)
If I didn't know him, I think I probably would have gone to clubs and just chatted up the DJs. All the DJs that advertise themselves as wedding DJs are way overpriced, because they know people are dropping stupid money on their wedding, so $3k for a DJ isn't a big deal. It's an insane racket; weddings in general that is.

its crazy how once vendors hear the word "wedding" their prices magically jump up. we've tried avoiding the word "wedding" when calling around for various things but the conversation often ends up talking about what kind of event it is, and boom, too late to negotiate prices.

luckily the DJ we're going with, who we know from college, is giving us a good discount

Even if you've got a good band, there's always more people dancing with a DJ. Plus the volume is always pretty off with bands, usually way too loud for the space for people to really enjoy themselves.

    Go with a DJ.

Unrelated, I can offer DJ services....

They're not performing the songs, so they can't be as hacky as a hack band hacking their way through a cover.

We went with both a DJ and live music. I'm in a band and also played in a different band in college. We had the DJ do about 45 minutes, then my old college band got up for a little 'reunion' and played for about 30 mins, then back to the DJ for 45, then my current band did about 40 mins, and then the DJ finished the rest of the night. Everyone really loved the setup and it was a great combo, a little something for everyone.

We spent 40k that year on ourselves.

5k on the wedding. 35k spread between a down payment on a house, 3 weeks in Europe, and 14 DMB shows.

Considering that the wedding lasted all of 6 hours or so, I'm happy with that distribution.

Oh and if anyone needs a photographer in the tri-state area, our guy was fantastic. Quite cheap too, actually. He's won a ton of awards on theknot and all those chick wedding sites.

The only wedding pictures we ever look at are the ones taken with the disposable cameras we put out on the tables for guests to use.

The "professional" ones were looked at once, the day we got them, and have been sitting in a bag in my closet ever since.

I got lucky. I married a DMB freak. She doesn't spend 18 hours a day on the message boards like I do, but she's pretty much down for as many shows as we can afford per year.

At least your chick is down for some (or to let you roll solo if she's not down). Got a couple friends whose girls can't see the point of going to N2 of a two night-stand, in their own city, and won't let their man go without them. So sad.

Was talking to a colleague of mine and he said that his photographer bailed on him the DAY of the wedding. He said it turned out better though because he didn't have to pay the photographer and once they got the word out that there was no photographer, everyone who had a phone or brought a camera themselves took more pictures then normal. They ending up with hundreds of pictures throughout the whole day.

That's pretty much what happened to us, except we didn't even try to hire a photographer.
Wife's step-dad has a super nice camera, so he took all the staged, cheesy, posed photos. The "official" ones, if you will.
Everyone there took a ton with their digital cameras, phones and with the disposable ones we put out on the tables, and like I said, those are the only ones we ever look at. I sent the "official" ones to my mom so she had something to frame, but that's the only use we got out of them.
I've yet to regret not hiring a photographer.

I always get a kick when I get the email from friends saying "here's the link to our wedding photos, let us know which one's you want printed up."

Sorry, I have no desire to spend money on pictures from your wedding. I'm fine with the ones on my iPhone.

Sorry, I have no desire to spend money on pictures from your wedding. I'm fine with the ones on my iPhone.
i completely agree with this, and we still got a photographer for our wedding this september i know that my friends won't want to buy any of our photos, they'll be fine with the ones they took or the ones that we put up on facebook. i rarely look at the wedding photos of friends, even for the ones where i was in the wedding party

i woulda been ok with eloping, but my fiancee wanted the real thing, and so did her dad, who wants to walk his only daughter down the aisle. kinda hard to argue with that, especially when he's opening his wallet for that day. friends of ours are eloping to new zealand for 2 weeks - for them its much more understandable, they both have estranged families and divorced parents who can't be in the same room with their former spouse and won't be accommodating at all to their kids who are getting married
