Re: ***Official Rank the AFTW Songs Thread***
it's no big surprise that the three best-known songs are ranked in the bottom four, three of the top four songs are songs that have been hidden from us, and the most-hyped song is the top song. obviously, we're in the honeymoon period.
here are my rankings and thoughts:
it's an album of good songs, but not a single one stuck out to me immediately. most of the songs are equally fun and forgettable, although some do have their moments. the production is wonderful and the arrangements are nice, but the message is soft and doesn't stick. content people generally have little worth talking about and it shows in this album. depression, death, existential crisis, young love, and the hope of doing good are ideas that fueled many of my favorite dmb songs. these themes seem to be mostly absent. the biggest challenges in the lives of normal men over forty revolve around holding family together and confronting age, and it shows. personally, i don't see more than one or two favorites coming from this album, which was the way i initially felt and still feel about big whiskey. that being said, i'm glad to have boyd back, i enjoyed the many time signature changes, and, most of all, i'm glad to have new dmb music to enjoy.
1) mercy: i've loved it from the first time i heard it. it's easily one of my favorite dmb songs.
2) rooftop: this one will get people moving and singing without a doubt. i want to rank it lower, but i can't find a reason why.
3) the riff: it's probably the most mature song on the album. i'll probably find myself leaning on this one later in life.
4) broken things: it's a nice opener with some interesting timing. it reminds me of "fool to think" and "the idea of you," which are both great songs.
5) sweet: i love the comparison of a boy who is tired of swimming with and a man who is tired of his life. i hate the way the band jumps in to end the song -- it's just too much too suddenly.
6) belly belly nice: an upbeat and tight song in the vein of "smlam" or "cornbread" -- sexually charged and a lot of fun. it will inspire many silly dances.
7) gaucho: the verses and music are golden. the chorus and the kids kill it for me. otherwise, it would have been ranked much higher.
8) drunken soldier: probably the most interesting song on the album, but there are way too many pieces to convincinly pass it off as a single, coherent song. it seems like the junk bin for all the awesome song bits that didn't grow into full songs.
9) belly full: it's a love song for married people. it's a nice change of pace on the album and a bit of a safe spot, but that's about all.
10) snow outside: it's nice to see an old friend again, but they have definitely become less cool in the time since.
11) if only: someone left and and someone else regrets causing it -- big surprise. at least it's got a nice groove.
