You could argue that a lot of Watchtower covers are better than Dylan's, but something just seems wrong about that.

Calexico covering The Arcade Fire's "Ocean of Noise," and I love The Arcade Fire.

the thing about dylan covers are that his songs are so simple that artists have a lot of freedom to make them their own. not necessarily that they're better than his, but almost a completely different song.

also, shoot me, but i prefer mayer's free fallin to tom petty's.

I won't shoot you. I tend to agree with that, too. I also agree with the comments re: Ryan Adams' cover of Wonderwall, although I still love Oasis' original. My own addition to this list would be David Gray's "Say Hello, Wave Goodbye", which is actually a cover of a song by Soft Cell (yes, the "Tainted Love" synth-pop band. No, really).

Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah is unbeatable. Also, I saw Dylan play watchtower live and it sucked. Hendrix and DMB all the way.

I'm faily certain that Dylan himself has said that he consider's Hendrix's version to be the definitive one. I agree with him. I mean it wasn't even the best song on John Wesley Harding.

As for seeing it live - I dont think Dylan's performed well live for the last 15 years or so. I do love him though.

I love Calexico. One of my favorites, but Arcade Fire's is better. Damn good attempt by Calexico though, and I def recommend everyone checking them out.

Oh and Ocean of Noise is my favorite AF song.

That would be in my top 5 WORST covers of all time. It's absolutely dreadful.

Nirvana's cover of "Lake of Fire" is better than The Meat Puppets' version.

Dynamite Hack's cover of "Boyz in the Hood" is better than Easy E's version.
