***Antsmarching.org’s Top Films of 2018 - Due: Feb 22nd***

It’s time for our 10th annual film poll!

Like always, the deadline for submissions is delayed until the weekend of the Academy Awards so as to give users much needed time to catch up on all of the stuff they’ve been meaning to watch.

In the meantime, feel free to use this thread to discuss what you liked, what you didn’t like, what you’re most looking forward to seeing, etc.

1) Final submissions are due by noon EST on February 22, 2019. Results will be announced before the Academy Awards broadcast on February 24, 2019.

2) Votes should be PMed to me here on Ants. Please remember to number your lists in order to simplify things.

3) Lists are capped at 50, with a minimum of 10 entries necessary to be scored.

4) As a general rule of thumb, a theatrical release is eligible if it was designated as a limited release in the United States in 2018. Films that only had festival screenings and no accompanying theatrical release are not similarly eligible. I’m not really aware of any wide releases being delayed until after January 1, 2019. However, I would note that something like A Fantastic Woman, which was eligible for last year’s Academy Awards, is first eligible for us this year since it did not get a wide release until February 2, 2018. I know it came up last year, but May It Last: A Portrait of the Avett Brothers is first eligible this year as well.

Documentary features are eligible, as are television movies. Miniseries are not. If there are any other questions regarding eligibility, please feel free to ask.

5) Since final submissions are not due for two months, a “secret ballot” rule is almost unenforceable. I love the spirit behind it though and would ask that as the deadline gets closer, people use their best judgment and stop posting preliminary lists. We don’t want to needlessly ruin the suspense of the final results. I won’t bring this up again unless I see it being a problem in the weeks leading up to the deadline.

As a frame of reference, here are the top 10 lists for the last nine years:
2009 – WINNER: Moon
2010 – WINNER: Black Swan
2011 – WINNER: Drive
2012 – WINNER: Silver Linings Playbook
2013 – WINNER: 12 Years a Slave
2014 – WINNER: Gone Girl
2015 – WINNER: Room
2016 – WINNER: La La Land
2017 – WINNER: Logan

And just like the last six years, we'll also be polling Favorite Male Performance (Lead AND Supporting), Favorite Female Performance (Lead AND Supporting), Favorite Director, and Favorite Screenplay (Adapted OR Original).

Anyone interested should submit a list of their top 3 to 5 in each category, and then I'll attempt to reveal the winners contemporaneously with the Oscars broadcast

Plenty of time. That's why we set it out a couple of months.

I've seen most everything I need to. Still want to knock out the following:

    1. If Beale Street Could Talk
    2. Vice
    3. Mary Poppins Returns
    4. Border
    5. Burning
    6. Cold War
    7. The Guilty
    8. Free Solo
    9. Wildlife
    10. Blaze

I've seen 81 movies from 2018 up to this point. Still need to see another 30-50 probably, including most of the heavy hitters.

I'm just ready for next year. Shortly after we finish our 2019 voting, we're going to compile the Top 100 Films of the Decade.

    Nice!

Okay, I need recommendations on what movies to try and get in over the next couple of weeks. I haven't seen much so far this year so any help to narrow down the important ones would be appreciated

I will of course be doing our annual Oscars Poll as well, so when the nominations are announced I will get that ready.

I'll give you 20 that you haven't seen based on your Criticker rankings.

    Annihilation
    BlacKkKlansman
    Bohemian Rhapsody
    Can You Ever Forgive Me?
    Crazy Rich Asians
    Eighth Grade
    The Favourite
    First Man
    First Reformed
    Green Book
    Hereditary
    If Beale Street Could Talk
    Mary Poppins Returns
    Mission: Impossible - Fallout
    Paddington 2
    A Quiet Place
    Roma
    A Star Is Born
    Vice
    Widows

I wouldn't consider all of these to be the best, just the most quintessential.

Is “You Were Never Really Hear” considered a 2018 movie? I know it was in Cannes May 2017 but didn’t come here until April 2018. Just finished it. Pretty spectacular piece of work from Joaquin.

I will keep that mind. As of right now I know nothing about it and probably won't get to it at the pathetic rate I'm going. Finally saw Green Book tonight. First movie I've seen since making the post about needing to see movies. Totally slacking.
