Re: The Head and the Heart

I’ve listened to it probably 10 times and still can’t even really figure out what the song is trying to say. It’s so bland. Reminds me of new-school O.A.R. The way Jon is singing “criss-crossed in the wrong direction,” I can almost even hear Marc.

On a brighter note, I signed up for Josiah Johnson’s email list. Seems he’s happy and doing better, which I am glad to see. Hope he puts out some more music soon.

They just dropped another new song. I don’t love it.

On the other hand, I liked the new Lumineers song on first listen.

I am on my second listen and it’s about what I expected. A couple good songs, but overall, a disappointment and continued departure from the sound I liked about this band on the first two albums.

For me the highlights are the first song, See You Through My Eyes (which seems like it could be written about Josiah) and Saving Grace, which feels reminiscent of their early albums. The last song, Glory of Music, is very stripped down acoustic, which I enjoyed too.

I understand bands evolved, but this band’s departure from its earlier days and songwriting is a big bummer to me. They used to be one of my absolute favorite bands. I can still play the self-titled album and Let’s Be Still on repeat with no skips, but save a couple songs, the last two albums are just so generic and bland IMO.

The album is growing on me but it still is lacking heart, for lack of a better word. Need Josiah to come back if this band is ever going to recapture the magic of its first album.

Played the album on the way to Woodlands on Friday. Landed with a wet fart with the group, who are all HATH fans.

I really really didn't like it.

Has this album become less sucky sounding to anyone over the past month? Not me. This thing is so transparently targeted toward continued bland-genre streaming bucks. Sound track to CVS and Panera Bread. Lacks any of the identity from the first record. I'll be surely not the first to say it, with Josiah's departure THATH has lost their heart. Jon's choices and curated aesthetic can get f'ed.

Yeah I think that’s the general consensus, sadly.

Josiah was the heart of the band. He’s touring and making music but it seems like he’s mostly sticking around the Pacific Northwest right now.

Was intrigued by the new cover of the album so I added it to my work playlist. haven't gotten to it yet but I don't expect much, especially after reading the comments here. I saw these guys at a Willie Nelson Outlaw fest and it was a really boring show. Did these guys used to be good and just gone downhill?

Losing Josiah and the piano player has not worked out well.

Josiah actually cowrote one of the songs on the new album

But the band needs their mojo back

New documentary/live show out on Amazon Prime today. Admittedly haven’t loved their last two albums nearly as much as the first two, but they’ll always be a special band for me. The doc is a fun look back on the band’s formation and history, interspersed with performances from Pike Place Market.

I've seen them live and kind of sort of know their music but don't know their story or what's going on, what do you mean by a shame what they've become?

The simplest answer is that the founder and main songwriter left the band due to a drug addiction and they make bad music now.

Co-founder, and not the main songwriter, but his absence is felt
