Thank god for Phish.

So the last year that I remember being super pumped for DMB was 2006. I hit up several shows that year, and remember being so excited to go to one of the Charlottesville fall shows. I remember that show fairly well, the energy in that building was far and away the highest I've ever experienced at a DMB show. It was all setting up nicely... then the actual show ended up being so mediocre. I felt like they really had the opportunity to do something special there, and they completely didn't. Thats the point that DMB starting losing their luster to me.
Saw them a few times from 07-09, remember having fun at the tailgates and what not, but not much about the shows. Hit up one show in 2010, remember having a blast with a big tailgate pre-show party, but the music just didn't do much at all for me (and I think it was considered one of their better shows of the late 2000's- 7/31/10). That was the point that I knew DMB was pretty much done in my life. I had hit up 14 Phish shows the previous year, neither the experiences nor the music was even comparable. I have only seen 1 DMB show since, hometown show in 2016, and it was a snoozefest. Will I ever go to a DMB show again? Probably, but it would be more a matter of convenience as opposed to anything I would seek out or plan.
I wonder to what extent has it all been DMB actually getting worse vs me just discovering new things that I find much more entertaining/exciting/enjoyable/etc. Its probably a combination of both. I saw my first Phish show in 2003, and by mid-late 2000's I had seen a bunch of moe., as well as fair amounts of sprinklings of other bands like Panic, Cheese, UM. By the end of 2009 I was deep into Phish. So I had found better music (I know, I know music is subjective so shouldn't say "better" but I'm calling it how I see it). But on the other side of the coin there is no doubt in my mind that Le'roi played a HUGE part in DMB, more than I would have guessed when he was still alive and touring with them.
