It would unquestionably be very high octane.

To me, the last year DMB was good was 2008. Been a quick decline since.

    Thank god for Phish.

Do you think the members of Phish saw what happened to DMB with LeRoi gone, Butch no longer playing with the band and Timmy at every show and they thought "Dear God, we have to come back!"

Before you know it, 3AM announcement.

So the last year that I remember being super pumped for DMB was 2006. I hit up several shows that year, and remember being so excited to go to one of the Charlottesville fall shows. I remember that show fairly well, the energy in that building was far and away the highest I've ever experienced at a DMB show. It was all setting up nicely... then the actual show ended up being so mediocre. I felt like they really had the opportunity to do something special there, and they completely didn't. Thats the point that DMB starting losing their luster to me.

Saw them a few times from 07-09, remember having fun at the tailgates and what not, but not much about the shows. Hit up one show in 2010, remember having a blast with a big tailgate pre-show party, but the music just didn't do much at all for me (and I think it was considered one of their better shows of the late 2000's- 7/31/10). That was the point that I knew DMB was pretty much done in my life. I had hit up 14 Phish shows the previous year, neither the experiences nor the music was even comparable. I have only seen 1 DMB show since, hometown show in 2016, and it was a snoozefest. Will I ever go to a DMB show again? Probably, but it would be more a matter of convenience as opposed to anything I would seek out or plan.

I wonder to what extent has it all been DMB actually getting worse vs me just discovering new things that I find much more entertaining/exciting/enjoyable/etc. Its probably a combination of both. I saw my first Phish show in 2003, and by mid-late 2000's I had seen a bunch of moe., as well as fair amounts of sprinklings of other bands like Panic, Cheese, UM. By the end of 2009 I was deep into Phish. So I had found better music (I know, I know music is subjective so shouldn't say "better" but I'm calling it how I see it). But on the other side of the coin there is no doubt in my mind that Le'roi played a HUGE part in DMB, more than I would have guessed when he was still alive and touring with them.

I took a break from DMB for a few summers after a show in 2007. There are likely WORSE DMB shows before or since then but I had somewhat had it with the band at this point.

    Here was the set (8/7/2007)

    Everyday
    You Might Die Trying
    Hunger for the Great Light
    When the World Ends
    Grey Street
    #27
    Don't Drink the Water
Sweet Up and Down (highlight of the night. first full band since 2000)
    Sister
    The Idea Of You
    Crush
    Where Are You Going
    Corn Bread
    Louisiana Bayou
    Seek Up
    Stay
    =========
    Some Devil
    #40 (Tease)
    Tripping Billies

My total rating of this is a "2"

Then take a look at the next night. Such a better show (this show may have made me do the thing of "always see the last night in a stand if I'm seeing any show") https://antsmarching.org/tour/ViewShow.php?ShowID=3743

But for me in 2008 and 2009 I didn't have people that wanted to go see DMB. In 2010 I had some new people that were in to DMB and I heard they were going to take 2011 off (ha!) so I figured I might as well see them because the next opportunity would be 2012. Since then I've gone to at least one show every year since 2012. Mainly because I have people that want to go so I go with them but I don't stress about the shows as much as I would have in the 00s.

I feel like that’s better than any setlist from DMb in the last couple years that I’ve looked up. You got a Sweet up adn down bust out. Feel like they opened with “That Girl Is You” at least 50% of shows last summer, whatever the fuck that is.

copy/past for those that don't want to click on twitter.

A conversation was happening that DMB doesn't play enough "rarities" or more different songs in general and I guess Stefan was tagged. He quote-tweeted this:

"Grateful Dead, Phish, Widespread Panic had/have hundreds of songs in their rotation. Phish and Panic typically go 3-5 shows without repeats. Not advocating one over the other but rock n roll bands have been around for decades doing this. DMB rocks too."

    and said this:

"Non of those bands have any real radio hits or hit records. Great bands but we our in our own catagory. We have popular hits, albums, and we jam. We are also high octane for the whole show. Carter having the most octane!"

    followed by:

"I really just don’t care at all what Phish does, like at all, zero fucks given."

but he followed up with this: https://twitter.com/SLessard/status/1107834680009740288

"I actually like Phish I just don’t base our shows off theirs in any shape or form. They do them, we do us."
This just solidifies my disdain for Fonz. He is without a doubt my least favorite member of DMB. DMB should've dropped him 20 years ago and replaced him with Victor Wooten.

The thing is, Fonz is a great player. He just needs to get the fuck off Twitter. Everytime he tweets, I like him and (by extension) the band less.

I’d classify fonz as good, not great. But claiming they should’ve dumped him for Wooten at their peak popularity is a weird take. He’s a founding member of the band.

Yea, Fonz is pretty good...like really damn good.

I’m a HUGE Wooten guy, but saying Stefan should’ve been replaced is asinine. DMB doesn’t even need a guy with a style like Wooten or Mike Gordon to hold it down.

Meh. Agree to disagree on Stefan being anything special.

Anyways, back to Phish. Still shut out on Mohegan Hotel rooms, dumb dumb me just realized there was a second casino about 15min away. So I’m now booked at Foxwoods while I wait to see if I get lucky and someone drops a Mohegan Room . Granted it’s not the convenience of walking back to a room attached to the venue after the show but at least I’ll get my gambling fix. haha

Victor Wooten gives DMB an entirely new sound and gives them the ability to reach even further. I happen to be a huge fan of Victor Wooten that's why I suggested it. Don't care if he's a founding member. He's totally replaceable.

    Stefan definitely replaceable.

I actually think DMB would be better if they replaced Stefan with Victor Wooten, dropped Rashawn but kept Jeff Coffin, dropped Timmy, swapped out Futureman for Carter and replaced Dave with Bela Fleck. Just one mans opinion.

Saw Mike for the first time last night. Damn, what a show. Not super familiar with his band or songs, but a very cool / intimate performance. They rage.

I can pick out a bunch of great artists and plop them into other bands in my head, but lets live in reality here.

Lucky for you that band is touring again.

I'm also in the 'Stefan isn't that good' camp. Sure he's not supposed to be a standout bassist in that band, but there's room for him to do more. Stefan is definitely the least talented member now that Boyd is gone.

Not saying Stefan is anything particularly special, but he's a very good player. Bass players don't have to be VW's to be 'good.' Bass has a very specific role.

Pino Palladino doesn't rage up and down the neck in solos (or even take many at all), and he's probably the most sought-after bassist in the game.

Definitely. I hate catching uber’s after large events but when the events at a casino, hell i’ll head to the game tables after the show (not smart financial wise but will be fun haha) and can catch an Uber/cab 2 hours later when everyone cleared out.

    Lucky for me indeed!

I’ve actually never seen Bela and the Flecktones live. I’ve seen other acts with Bela but never the original flecktones. It’s on the to do list.

I personally think that Stefan is the least talented even including Boyd. I mean I guess that depends which era Boyd though. I think early Boyd was very good and was a huge driving force of the sound and success of DMB. Late Boyd was almost unlistenable. My last DMB show was 2016 (and was my only post 2010 show) and Boyd looked and sounded just awful. I’m not sure if this was the case but he looked like someone super whacked out on opioids. Hope for his sake that wasn’t the case. He could barely keep his eyes open during the show. Although in all fairness I was having the same problem, it wasn’t exactly a barn burner of excitement.

Anyways, Im a big Victor Wooten fan, but not sure how he would work in DMB. actually it wouldn’t work, he’s too good for DMB. For your listening enjoyment on this Tuesday AM:

Giving the Baker's Dozen MSG 7-29-17 show a spin on Spotify. Trying to acclimate myself more to their style as I get closer to Bonnaroo.
