your swing speed should not change from club to club. maybe you have a grandpa shaft on your driver

Re: In need of some golf tips...

Played for the first time on Sunday since October of 2007. Shot horribly, 124. It was the first time I'd done anything golf related since the last time I was out, and it was obvious. I think I have a mental block when it comes to teeing off in the tee box. I have horrible drives, but when I hit from the fairway or the light rough, the ball goes right where I want it to. Any suggestions?

I'd have to see your swing, but for many people, they think because it is a bigger club, they need to try and rip it. Gripping the club tighter, swinging harder, not lining up correctly. Concentrate really hard on swinging the exact same way you swing your iron from the fairway. I think that will give you straight drives with a little distance. Eventually, you can work on slightly increasing the speed of your drive to get more distance.

tempo is key and i agree that most try to kill it with the driver...but having a different swing between different clubs is a no-no.

no, they wouldnt. the weight of the club doesnt relate to how far you can hit the ball

So earlier I said I went golfing today, but I don't know if what I did on the course today actually qualifies as golf. Just bad all around.

sounds like me when i played the day after going to the msg show i was running on 4 hours of sleep and was slightly hungover, and i played like absolute crap. nothing was going well for me. drives, irons, chips, irons. NOTHING was working. luckily my two rounds since then have been much better

I decided I'll be bringing what I call "The Insurance 6-pack" for my next few rounds. So if things start going south, I'll have a 6 pack to make it more enjoyable.

Re: In need of some golf tips...

A new par 3 course has opened a few miles away from where I live, so I'm going to go check it out on Wednesday with a mate of mine.

I've started going through my bag and upgrading my clubs...started off yesterday with a pair of Srixon Z-Steel 3 and 5 woods, but was a bit undecided on the driver. The shop that I was at had a whole heap of Taylormade Burners, but they were all regular shafts and I prefer stiff. So I might go back tomorrow and see what else there is because I was a bit pushed for time yesterday. The irons I'm happy with for now, but my current driver and woods are on the cheap side and I sorely need to get something better. That's part of getting a second hand set to start off with, but it's only now I can actually afford to lay down some $$ for good equipment that's suited to my game (especially my driver, which has too much loft for my liking).

played 6 times this season so far. 98-96-92-94-103-93. My biggest problem is that whenever i have a par putt it seems to be at least a 20 footer or longer. I need to get more accurate with my short irons to have any shot are scoring in the 80's. Whats funny about my rounds is the 103 was probally one of my better rounds so far in terms of ball striking and putting. I made 2 30 foot putts but i ended up losing about 10 balls in the woods/water. If i could have kept them in play i was looking at a low 90's score most likely. First time i played at this course and i was pretty reckless with my approach on most of the holes.

I did a bit of price gathering for my driver purchase...looking at a max spend of $300 Australian. The ones that have caught my eye are the Taylormade Burner (08 model), Srixon Z-Ti, Nike SQ 5000 and 5900, and Cleveland HiBore XLS. Anyone happen to own or have used one of these and recommend them? The guy I was speaking to at my local pro shop says that the SQ 5900 would be his pick of the bunch.

Unless you're going for the R7 or R9, I would stay away from the Taylormade. That being said, the Nike is the best of that bunch...

I have the Nike SQ and I love it. I have been slicing a lot more lately but trying to correct it at the range. I think it is just a matter of turning my hand in a little bit on my grip. But my distance is about 30 yards farther out.

I was rolling my wrist earlier this season and slicing the hell out of the ball. I've since corrected it and my King Cobra has added about 40 yards to my drive...

The R7 is just out of my budget range by about $70. I'm tossing up between the SQ5900 ($300 Aussie) and the HiBore (on special for $199 Aussie). Plus I came across a clearance bin of various ex-demo Taylormade 6 irons (various degrees of R7 and Burners - all in great condition) for $39 each, so I'm going to pick one of those up and see what it's like so that I can decide whether or not it'll be worth putting some money into the rest of the irons in that particular series.

Regardless of whatever driver I end up getting, it'll end up being a hell of a lot better than the one that I've had since I bought my clubs a couple of years back. They were second hand and all I could afford at the time, so they had the hallmarks of a beginner's set, although the irons arent too bad.

The Nike is a a hell of a driver, and my dad crushes it. When I was looking at new woods last year I went with Adams and I love them. There is a lot of bang for your buck there, and my 3 wood is the only fairway wood I have ever been able to his consistent shots with off the grass.

Adams don't really sell much down here in Australia at all...don't think I've ever seen them in a pro shop or other golf shop I've been to.

I'd look at the Ping Rapture or some of the Cobra drivers.

Great drivers for their price. You can get last years model of both for $199 or less at most places I think.

I sliced all the time with my driver, similar to the OP. Tip I was given (sorry if its been mentioned), is to slightly rotate your right hand on top of your left more. Fixed my slice...now I just have to stop 4-putting.

I upgraded to Wilson Staff Di7 irons last summer. I've probably added 10-15 yards in length to each club. Makes a huge difference when you can hit a 9 iron from 140 instead of a 7 iron.
