I just picked up The Who - Quadrophenia. Very excited to find this one. Sleeve is messed up some, but the records are in great condition.

I have been vinyl myself for a while, but not going really after collector ones, just stuff I like and doing my own thing. So, I have been wondering, in the vinyl world, are there any that are considered the Holy Grail for collectors?

All this talk of vinyl makes me want to watch High Fidelity.
Anyway i could get a BTCS on vinyl ?????
    How did you get yours?

You pay lots and lots of money on ebay for it. Or, hope you are lucky and come across someone who doesn't know the going rate and get it cheap from them.

There are many holy grails in the vinyl world. It's depending on what you consider holy. Requirements are Limited, and OOP.

My holy grail is Tool's Signed Lateralus X2 Picture discs. They are autographed by all 4 band members inside the vinyl and only 200 were made. I will never part with it. They originally sold for 100 dollars to ToolArmy members and I've seen them sold on ebay 3 years later for 1500 dollars.

    Here it is:

UTTAD and Crash will be getting their first release on vinyl in the next 2 years, and BTCS will be repressed at the same time. It won't have the collector's value as the first 1998 limited run, but if you actually want to listen to music on vinyl, as most of us in here do, it'll be what you want to get.

You'll pay a lot for a sealed UHRQ MOFI copy of Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band, even though it's not the best version. Original mono pressings in good condition won't go for even 1/10th, but may be more sonically pleasing.

Test pressings depending on rarity can go very high.

Here's a STILL SEALED copy of the Beatles Yesterday and Today MONO with the Butcher cover - $16,000 - http://cgi.ebay.com/BEATLES-Yesterda...3A1%7C294%3A50

I've actually bought a few records from this guy and he's an excellent seller, of course I haven't bought anything like this from him!

    Nirvana Bleach - white wax test pressing - $25,000 - http://cgi.ebay.com/Nirvana-Bleach-W...3A1%7C294%3A50

This is what I did. Found someone selling it on GEMM for $20. It was opened but absolutely mint.

I don't have too many rarities but BTCS is easily the highlight of my small collection. I've also got Nick Drake's original "Time Has Told Me" 3LP.

My personal holy grail of my collection is Ryan Adam's Two 7" signed by the band. There were only 100 released during a pre-sale of Easy Tiger a few years back.

Did they release the Love is Hell on vinyl at all? I'd love to get that.
Have you heard any of the 5.1 SACD releases? Really nice quality, blows away the CD. Gold sounds luscious on SACD.

They do. I picked up copy for $12.99 at Tower 5 years ago. Now they're selling for $100-150 a pop on eBay. For some reason it wasn't re-released when the rest of his stuff came out.

I've got Gold on 5.1 and, yes, it's delicious.

Just got another new one yesterday. Found Bela Fleck "Natural Bridge" at my store I like to go to. Haven't got to listen to it yet, but when I do, I will let all of you know how it is. It is his second solo album he put out.

Setup my Pro Ject Debut III with a Cambridge Audio 540P phono preamp today. Had some initial setup issues, but a video on Youtube helped me out. Currently listening to Ray Lamontagne and it sounds amazing

vinyls just came out about a week ago for the first two. GITG has been out since a month after the official release of the cd. local record stores and the stands links should have what you are looking for.

That's insane. I bought this album from MusicDirect or one of the other vinyl album sellers a few years ago for whatever the retail price was. I wish I could find my confirmation e-mail from when I bought it. I had no idea it was worth so much. I'll have to take better care of it from now on.

    Here's one for sale:

you have recommended turntables and phono preamps. I really like my receiver, therefore the only thing left is speakers. Have you recommended speakers yet? It would be great if you could or have.

    Thanks!

I think speakers definitely should be auditioned whenever possible, but in saying that you're best off auditioning speakers in your own home where they are going to live! If you've got a good relationship with your dealer, they should let you have a 24h demo with their demo speakers, obviously they're not going to let you go home with brand new speakers.

Online dealers do though, because they make the speakers. I would consider Aperion Audio, AV123 and Axiom Audio. They all have 30-day in home trials with money back guarantees. Just pick whatever is in your budget! BrahmaBull (he posts here) has a pair of the Axiom M3 bookshelf speakers which are around $330/pair and they have a great sound with decent low extension as well.

For in store I'd recommend Paradigm, B&W, Swan, Martin Logan, Magnepan, just loads of good speakers out there. You could even get more speaker for the buck by finding a good used deal on www.audiogon.com

What sort of budget were you looking at?

    These are the $330/pair M3's - http://axiomaudio.com/m3.html
Great entry-level speaker into the audiophile world...and you have 30 days to decide if they're not for you, but I'd be surprised if they didn't put a big smile on your face for sub-$500 speakers, they're very nice and neutral with a big soundstage and they can handle being pushed.

Question: any of you peeps know how to change the needle in a 1960s record player?
Do you have the make and model of the turntable (and possibly the tonearm and cartridge)?
