If I remember right, didn't Come Tomorrow mention in the description that it came with a digital download? I remember us all passing codes around

I don't see a mention of a digital download with the vinyl releases this time

I would only pre order with some type of b side studio bonus. From my count, the band has only released 6 studio bonus B-side songs in 30 years. Pretty sad.

Good point. Yeah there was a whole thread for sharing codes, everyone had a surplus of Come Tomorrow

I pay $35/year to be a member of the Warehouse. One main reason I do so is for the Warehouse exclusive discs that are released as part of a bonus to pre-orders. That should answer the question being asked.

Idk if you just straight up bought the album, but if you bought a ticket, you could choose a code or a physical copy. Most people chose codes and gave the extras away.
I made those fuckers send me 14 physical copies.

I think there were codes for a free copy of the album with ticket purchases. I'm not sure about downloads specifically.

Amazon used to (or maybe still does) have what they called AutoRip, which would give you the mp3s of a physical album you bought. I don't see that option with the preorder for WATM, though.

First DMB album for which I am a vote for "No, I will not pre-order, but may buy it, depending on how good it is"

I've been a lock to buy every previous LP

I likewise didn't preorder it since there is no incentive to do so. I'll probably go buy it at Target on release day. I *might* preorder the deluxe vinyl, but I'll more likely just throw that in my cart with the next Live Trax.

Long time fan but after Come Tomorrow and seeing the details about this one I have no interest in preordering. If it happens to be good i will pick it up from a local record shop. Looking at the results it appears just over 50% of fans on a devoted message board are not preordering lol. Pretty much the state of dmb at this point.

Yes, under a 100 people on a message board. An old hat way of communicating on the internet is the way to gauge it all

Especially when really only people that buy vinyls would be the ones that preorder.

Because there is 0 incentive to do so. Most artists big and small offer something, more than different colors, to make it worth the pre order. A few extra songs. A fucking bracelet or shoelaces... Whatever. Anything to make it seem worth it to put money down in advance.

DMB is like buy all the colors! And buy them 4 months in advance. Whhhheeeeee!

I bought one vinyl just because it's DMB. It will probably sit in my cabinet and get played once and never touched again just like Come Tomorrow.

Well it is a population sample - and one I would think would be heavily biased towards preordering. Typically only die hard fans are going to hang out on a message board. And not getting 50% of die hard to preorder in this sample is a bit humorous if nothing else.

Yeah I suppose you are correct. Even a disc of 3-4 studio bsides that contained anything at all played live since 2006 would have helped quite a bit I'm sure. I think I still would have just waited for the rip tho.

I think DMB has a reach of die hards that spans further than just over a hundred people on here. And this is one of the more negative places that have turned off a lot of people over the years. Look at the FB groups, reddit, etc. This place is not where I would think they could go to get an accurate forecasting number. Finding show recommendations/performances for live trax/WH discs tho - definitely.

I'm confused about this "incentive to pre-order" narrative, and maybe I don't understand what pre-ordering means. Isn't the incentive you want to own a physical copy of the album when it's released? Isn't pre-ordering just...ordering? I bought it, and it will come at a later date. It's just weird to me that ordering a copy of your favorite band's new album is controversial around here. Please somebody tell me how/why I'm wrong, happy to be corrected here.

Basically yes. Pre ordering is done for Red Light Management for them to know what to press on vinyl for it to be sent out. Not really sure about the cd deluxe version if that’s a whole different ball game.

I don't know that you're wrong or need to be validated or corrected, but clearly music labels and game developers (and probably other industries) want people to pre-order their products. There's a push for it, and usually there's an incentive to pre-order, such as a pre-order only bonus or perceived limited availability. I would argue that pre-ordering is not just to own the actual product, but to get something extra with it. That's pretty standard, I believe.

In this case, you're definitely correct: pre-ordering is ordering.

I'm not mad at them for not incentivizing, but the only way I'd pre-order is if I have a reason to, but honestly when we have the ability to stream music at midnight on release day, and listen to it on YouTube, why would I order something months in advance that I'm not convinced is going to be that good, and I can go get it at Target later if I feel inclined? Being my favorite band is not enough reason to give them a loan. That's just me.

I buy this (ha) and appreciate the reply here. I guess the tension here is the convention that these labels have established is pre-ordering has its perks because it technically only serves them. I'm coming from a perspective of I'm going to buy the vinyl regardless, but acknowledge that not everyone is in a position or has interest to do that.

Maybe I'll buy the lavender vinyl, but unless they package this with a sweet ass LT, I'm going to Target to buy this release day.

To preorder the CD from the Warehouse and get it 5 days after the release date costs $20. I'll go to Plan 9 and buy it for probably $15 and get the exact same thing on the day it's released. If they threw a bonus disc in, I'd probably preorder it and just listen to it on Apple Music until it arrived in the mail.

Ha! Man, I miss Plan 9. Glad to hear it's still hanging on.

But this is the argument I've been waiting for. It didn't occur to me that pre-ordering is more expensive, so I'll go ahead and join the chorus against spending more money on the same product when I have no incentive to do so.

(even though I already did, and a lot of it)

Re: How many folks pre-ordered WATM?

if there is on bonus disk there is no point to pre order. i'll just go out and buy it so i can actually get it that day.

It's just weird to me that ordering a copy of your favorite band's new album is controversial around here. Please somebody tell me how/why I'm wrong, happy to be corrected here.
    For vinyl, sure.

I don't think in 2023 that most people have any interest in a CD. If they do, they probably don't want to wait for the trained monkeys at MusicToday to package and ship it days after release day.
No reason to pre-order a digital copy that's not going to come with anything different than what will be available through Apple or Spotify etc... on release day. So if you want people to do either of those things, pre-order CD or digital, they're probably going to need some incentive to do so, like a bonus disc that won't be available on streaming platforms.

    That's my position anyway.

This is precisely why I haven't ordered it yet
