Because now they can play these songs they worked on and finished, to death on the road before committing them to an official release. This allows the band to scrap most of them or all of them, and we'll wait till 2024 for the next album. Hope we don't love any of the songs!

Kidding...sort of. I do hope we hear a new song from the studio (if not more) before the first night of the tour.

i guess there's no official email but warehouse has a post up about the new tour and it says nothing about a new album, though it does reference Earth Day. so there's that. i read DMB posted something on the facebook page too about the tour with no album reference.

agreed. though Chad's reappearance in this thread at the beginning of this week got me thinking, especially when it was revealed yesterday that tour announcement was today. oh well. c'est la vie. I would just love to hear something consistent and cohesive from this band, even it its a total departure from other albums.

Can any of our insiders give us anything to tide us over? Chad referenced it still existing, and maybe being out by tour time, which is always appreciated. But lack of official news at this juncture feels pretty frustrating.

I was just thinking that the band may want to keep everything wide open for the 30th anni tour. No attachment to playing 6 or 7 new album tunes each night, but instead feel free to pull from anything in their catalog. That can obviously mean any officially released studio work, unreleased & unrecorded (live only tunes), leaked, rarities, etc. Then they can release the album at the end of the year or beginning of 2022 for new album tour.

That said, I'd rather they release the new album and just not worry about playing so many of the new tunes. Live they should focus on something special for the 30th shows.

Maybe a “tease” before a title and date.
Maybe a graphic at some point that will say something like “New album coming summer (or fall) 2021” or something like that.

Would it make sense? Most of the tickets for this tour were purchased last year. Its not like announcing a new album would sell tickets. I realize some people were issued refunds for their tickets. In my opinion, theres no reason to announce an album to sell tour tickets.

The only alternative is announcing the album in a few weeks and with no mention of the tour. They may want to avoid people thinking they're getting the album with a tour ticket, like they did with the Come Tomorrow album.

i guess. but why would you record an album only to go road test it. that's backwards. It's one thing to loosely jam around some concepts and road test them to see how they evolve. It's another thing to bring everyone in and lay down tracks in the studio and tell people an album is done, only to go road test the songs. For them to do what? Rerecord them after they're road tested and altered? This band doesn't do that which is why we have IOY with a coldplay "clocks" drum beat.

I thought they didn’t do that too much (I know Dave did that when he was working on Some Devil) . I know the case in December 2000 was they finished what’d become everyday just before leaving for the tour and then didn’t play any of those songs (except for teasing the title track) to avoid getting included on tapes knowing fans tape shows.

my guess based on nothing is....they announced a tour, awesome. why not announce the album release to coincide with the tour? because these dates could easily get cancelled again. i havent seen any info on how venues plan on doing this yet. just open the doors to everyone? require vaccination? require a negative test result? is it gonna differ from venue to venue? what if cases spike here or there? they can always cancel dates again or cancel the first week or two, if they announce an album then they are pretty commited to releasing said album as announced, even if they are forced to cancel dates again. yes, they could postpone the release if the bottom falls out on this but the backlash would be terrible. so maybe they wait to announce the album until they see how this tour gets off the ground? maybe it gets announced at start of tour and released a week or two into the tour. btcs was announced and released a week or so into tour if i remember correctly. still allows them to play new songs, and fans have it with alot of tour to go. they announce it and delay it, they will have a riot on their hands.

What is this backlash you’re preparing for? You think we’re not used to shit being cancelled on us yet? Album delay riots? Haha, that’s kind of ridiculous.

They can’t say covid rules in this announcement because who the hell knows what that will be yet? It’s too early to know what will be required and different venues will probably have their own stuff.
As for the album, there are plenty of reasons they could be holding off on announcing it officially.
