Re: New Song: Windows
I've heard a lot of people say they don't want to hear this song at live shows or on a new album. That it had it's time and place, maybe it should have been an EP to raise money for Covid relief, etc. But that time and place is in the past and the song should be left there...
I hope we haven't seen the last of this song. I understand the song was definitely written about the pandemic, but I think the song can continue to work. Looking back at the lyrics, to me this song is going to be about losing a close friend or loved one, and trying to get back to normal life in the aftermath of that. The song is full of relatively common imagery being looked at as a trigger due to trauma - sirens in the dark, shadows on the wall, etc. And then you have lines like "Be good to see you, but suppose when it's all said and done." (I wish you were here, but I'll see you when I join you on the other side) or "picking up the pieces of everyday... memories in picture frames." This is a person struggling with loss and trying to figure out how to feel normal again.
My idea for how to introduce this song into a live setting... I'd love to see Dave do this song as an E1. Change the lyric to "But I AM going out tonight" (representing getting on with life) and then right after the next line "So dance with me like the time we've got is borrowed" go directly into some quiet recorded solo Roi had that could fit. I'm sure with the hundreds of hours of recordings we haven't heard, someone could find something that could fit. I'd settle for a nice quiet duet between Dave and Jeff.
