I'm not so sure. As I've said before, I think they sound like Dire Straits if they formed in the 2010s.

I don't hear a lot of innovation in rock right now in general. That isn't to say that rock groups can't be cutting edge, but I feel like rock is at this middle-age point where it's exhausted a lot of avenues for discovery.

Blackgaze (Deafheaven, older Alcest, Woods of Desolation, etc.) feels like the freshest thing in the rock spectrum in recent years to me.

it does seem bizarre that I've seen a few places tout the war on drugs as the leaders of the new rock movement. I love their music, but it is relatively straightforward modern americana for the most part

Exactly. I like most of what we've heard from Deeper Understanding so far — I feel like we have about half of the record already — but I don't think it's doing anything particularly innovative. Which is fine. I can still enjoy it on its own merits.

I'm not sure how else one can innovate rock before it becomes another genre, if we define genre by certain musical elements.

I think after decades of writing about rock music people have run out of things to say, so calling something innovate is the slightly better seeming way of saying "hey, I like it. It's good rock music."
