Unfortunately it has been stated on these boards endlessly that a lot of people no care about the music, it's more about the hang...so not "everyone". I've been to shows for all sorts of artists where there people around us talking the whole time. SPAC N2 there was this Will Arnett looking twit that in front of us that was all about over-exaggerated gestures and being seen during the songs he liked and then tuning out for other things or going to get a beer every other song. His girlfriend was pretty much buried in her phone for about 80% of the show.
Anyway, I get that the lights are a big deal for the band and the overall performance and engaging a crowd (possibly rowdy, high, too mellow, drunk, adult ADD/ADHD suffering, etc.) and helping build climaxes and crescendos to the music. For me they are unimportant...that's all I'm saying. Pink Floyd did a great light show and had all the appropriate props when I saw them in 1987, but I was just about listening to Gilmour sing and play, with Rick's boards and Nick's drums...even Pratt nailing those bass parts.
Dire Straits was just basic lights and the band was awesome...even from an MSG skybox.
