Sloooow dooown

I’ll try to keep this and concise as possible. I’ve been a fan for over 20 years and have been in the boards for just as long. Out of all issues people have had with the band the last decade the one thing that bothers me the most is the increase in tempo for every live song. Every song is performed so fast that it robs all emotion out of it. Case in point, DDTW. This song is played live at what sounds to me like double the tempo of the original version. It’s no longer a meditative rock opera but a fast, bloated, angry noise-athon. It’s still a good song but it was once great. Another example is Two Step. I can go on and on. I honestly think that half the sound we miss is related to the tempo being played. None of the song have room the breathe or spread their limbs anymore. Everything is being played at the same level of energy and the dynamics, or lack thereof, are killing the unique vibes the songs originally had. I couldn’t believe my ears while listening to the 7/20 stream. While still good, it could be excellent. Just slow it the hell done, fellas. What’s the rush?

yeah, agree with you esp. on Two Step. It’s been like that for 8 or 9 years... he always stumbles over himself while songing the chorus

Jesus, why do we have to make a separate thread for every single complaint. Maybe there should be one thread for all. Also, the band has slowed down a lot over the past two years. It did get too fast for a while, but I’m not sure what you are listening to now.

Unfortunately this band’s live sound shifted from jazzy to wannabe rock band around the time LeRoi died.

My biggest issue with the band is the overuse of the trumpet that makes them sound like an overly upbeat ska band.

Dude, I was very careful with my post. I was trying to make it clear that I thought that the songs/the band still sound good. My main point was to address why I think most people think the sound has changed. I personally think they should slow way down (for the sake of the songs, not the fans) but whatever, they can do whatever the hell they want.

What do you guys think of the tempo angle of the sound? Do you think it's intentional or do you think it's just part of the energy/adrenaline of the band? I know that when I play live I always have to pay attention to my internal metronome otherwise my adrenaline will get the better of me. Do you guys think they are speeding up the songs on purpose so that they can fit in more tunes with the time they are allotted? Let's try to keep this thread focus on the original topic. I was hoping to not let it become another dumping ground for random gripes with the band.

they do play too fast-n-loud but it's not as bad as it was a few years ago, they've slowed down some

I said in my original post that my point of reference was the 7/20 live stream. Compare that version of Two Step on the Crash version. Or, even more extreme, DDTW.

Dave was clearly very agitated during that stream. He went off on a profanity laced tirade because of Iran. I’ve never seen anything like it.

Compared to albums and a loooong time ago, sure theyre sped up. But they've actually been slowing down the tempos of many songs as of late, and it sounds great IMO.

We still have those old versions though because of the taping/trading policy. I will say, that Two Step at Woodlands during the acoustic set years ago was pretty sweet.

I wonder if there are some songs that sound better sped up?
